Robert Downey Jr. returns to play Tony Stark in Iron Man 2, the eagerly anticipated sequel to the 2008 superhero smash, Iron Man.

In this sensational follow-up, Stark must become Iron Man once more and do battle with Whiplash (Mickey Rourke - The Wrestler), and corporate rival Justin Hammer (Sam Rockwell - Moon). Scarlett Johansson (Lost In Translation) stars as sexy Russian spy Black Widow, and Don Cheadle (Boogie Nights) assumes the role of Colonel James Rhodes from Terrence Howard.

What is it with super hero movie makers? One good film and they decide the sequel must be "bigger, better, louder, busier". End result is a movie stuffed to overflowing with too many villains, too much action, too many subplots, and not enough core storyline.

It takes a good 60 minutes for Iron Man 2 to finally settle down to a managable pace, by which time the opportunity to care about the characters has passed, and you find yourself just enjoying the explosions.

Tony Stark's character is also a problem; his eccentricity has morphed into outright arrogance and self-obsession. He is no longer the likeable rogue of the first movie, he's far too full of himself in this piece. His lab is like something out of Minority Report with mid-air holographic displays instead of computer screens. It all feels a bit "show off"-ish.

The highlight of Part 2 is Whiplash - whose time battling our Iron hero is criminally limited to just a couple of scenes, and whose storyline could have equalled the awesome clash between Doc Ock and Spidey if only he were allowed the screen time.

Iron Man 2 is almost as bad as Spiderman 3. But not quite. Hollywood never seems to learn, that story and characterisation is key to a superhero film. All they need do is watch Batman Begins and The Dark Knight to see this. Iron Man 1 had so much promise. I hope they get it right for Part 3 but my faith in this franchise has been knocked by Part 2.

Good FX do not make a good movie. It's all about the characters.

This was a big in your face blockbuster of a movie! The perfect sequel to the original film taking it on a much higher scale with more badass villains and much more cool visual effects and fantastic mind blowing action which really cool. This is the perfect example of good entertainment on every level, great cast as usual, Robert Downey Jr was brilliant again in the role and developed it further! If you loved the original then make sure you dont miss this one of the ultimate popcorn films of the year!!

Robert Downey was born to play this role

When I saw the first Iron Man movie I thought it was ok, at best, and couldn't really figure out what all the fuss was about. Iron Man 2 however made me revise my opinion and I'm now a big fan of both movies. This is where the penny dropped for me. I finally get it and I firmly believe that without Robert Downey Jr as the lead these movies wouldn't have been half as successful or enjoyable. What we know about Mr Downey in real life allows us to 100% accept Tony Stark as this larger than life character and to just go with it. This is a Rock N' Roll movie, so just sit back and enjoy the ride. Great action, fun characters, hot chicks, and check out that race track scene, that alone is enough reason to buy this DVD. Great stuff, I'm converted

Does everything you want a superhero movie to do.

For the type of genre this film goes into, you really cant ask for anything more. It makes you laugh, gives you action and leaves you wanting more! Robert Downey Jr. is once again the star of the show! 3.5/4 stars.

after reading many negative reviews i did not bother with this at the cinema-big mistake.i can`t understand any of the negative reviews on here or anywhere else.people were comparing it to the overblown bloatedness of spiderman 3...its nothing like that at all.much to my surprise i really enjoyed it and i think most people would.just ignore the nay-sayers and enjoy it...the monaco and war machine fight sequences are really well staged and are very impressive.
