This is the story of Ponyo, a little fish from the sea who stuggles to realise her dream of living with a boy named Sosuke. It also tells of how five-year old Sosuke manages to keep a most solemn promise.

"Ponyo places Hans Christian Anderson's The Little Mermaid in a contemporary Japanese setting. It is a tale of childhood love and adventure" - Hayao Miyazaki.

The latest film from the internationally acclaimed Studio Ghibli (Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle), encapsulates everything that makes the studio's output so unique. Breathtaking animation combined with thrilling storytelling makes this another worthy addition to the Ghibli catalogue.

I'm a huge fan of Studio Ghibli, and I was estatic when I heard that another film called Ponyo On A Cliff By The Sea (Japanese Title) was coming out. As I couldn't watch it in Japan on release, and the English version isn't coming out to the cinemas in the UK until Feb 2010, and the actually DVD even longer! I decided to pre-order the official Japanese version which came out in Japan around June / July 2009.

Anyway the animation is FANTASTIC, it's just so colourful and beautiful and the story line is cute. This film is a lil different from others as it does feel like it's more pushed towards the younger generation, however don't be put off as although this is also great for kids and family, adults will still love it also, and if your a Ghibli fan you wont be dissapointed.

After watching it in Japanese, I had to see and hear what the English version it going to be like. Well as you will notice the film is just called 'Ponyo'.

For the English version, Disney have stepped in and hired the voice actors to Dub the film: Noah Cyrus, Frankie Jonas, Tina Fay, Matt Damon ect...

I was pretty worried when I saw the cast at first, however to be honest after hearing a lot of clips, I was actually quite impressed.

However Disney have ruined the end song, by getting rid of the Japanese song (which suited the film a lot) to a techno rubbish mess of... I wouldn't even call it music which Noah & Frankie sing along too, and it just doesn't suit going from the lovely orchestra to that techno genre.

Anyway enough chat from me! 5*!!!

 Superb family film

This is a superb family film for all to watch together. It has something for everyone. If you're a Miyazaki fan or a Ghibli fan or both, you will love this film. If you aren't yet, you will be after watching this. Again it is based on a British story (as Howl was and as the next Miyazaki film based on the Borrowers is as well).

If I have to pick a negative in the film I didn't much care for Ponyo's mother's animation - seemed to come right out of the 80's Japanese sci-fi animations. Other than that it was an extremely heart warming story, with fun, adventure, love, and so much more.

If you like this film, also see these Ghibli films: My Neighbour Totoro; Pom Poko; Kiki's Delivery Service; Whisper of The Heart; Spirited Away
Other excellent Ghibli films include: Princess Mononoke; Howl's Moving Castle; Grave of The Fireflies; Nausicaa.

Brilliant Ponyo is a miracle of a film!

Hi all!

Let me first start off by saying that I have been an avid fan of Studio Ghibli outings since i first set my bewildered eyes upon the majestic, moving and aweinspiring 'Spirited Away'.

Any man, woman and child will no doubt fall in love with Hiyao Miyazaki's creations. There is something etheral, innocent and beautiful about Miyazaki's animation, it is comparable to none.

And so, one cannot imagine the joy i felt when i had Ponyo delivered to me by Play.Com! I set about watching it straight away with my 3 year old son. And he was immediatly taken to Ponyo's world, as was I! The animation was stunning. A visual feast. Sumptous and dazzling to behold. Soonafter, my son wanted to watch it again! 'Ponyo' he cried! The story is so beautifully translated onto the screen. It is Miyazaki's translation of the 'Little Mermaid' story. But it is so much more than that too. I found Ponyo's father, the rock star alike 'Fujimoto' to be very funny indeed! And the voices were expertly forwarded onto screen by the likes of Liam Neeson, Cate Blanchett and Tina Fey who is terrific as Ponyo's friend, Susoke's mother.

To say this film is amazing would be an understatement. My one advice to readers would be to buy Ponyo ASAP! Ponyo was my first order from Play.com and i am truly surprised and satisfied as to how quickly i received my order. I am also awaiting Howls Moving Castle, which in my opinion is a masterpiece, and my favourite animated movie since Pinocchio!

All in all, Ponyo takes you back to your childhood and a time of innocence. Please dont take my word for it - BUY IT NOW AND WATCH IT!! MAKE IT A PRIORITY!! I ordered the 2 disc edition at a very bargain price from Play.com. I have been to other outlets and seen the ridiculous prices that some of Studio Ghibli's movies are retailing for. So it is an absolute bargain here. I am very pleased with my purchase and shall treasure it for years to come!

I hope you have found my review helpful, thanks!

 Great film.
