A Deep and Complex Sci-Fi Show

| | See all deanlowdon's reviews (348)

Although this may share the name as the cheesy sci-fi show of the 1970's this remake has very little else in common. In this reimagining man created a race of mechanical beings (Cylons) who became self aware and rebelled. Following a long battle the Cylons left and 40 years of peace followed. As the mini-series that opened proceedings begins the Cylons have returned, attacking the unprepared human colonies, leaving few survivors.

The majority of those that survived joined the fleet of ships protected by the only surviving military vessel, the Battlestar Galactica. The over-arching story is the human races search for a new home but as with all the best sci-fi shows Battlestar Galactica uses the setting to deal with real issues such as religion, terrorism and morality.

The show itself, anchored by the brilliant Edward James Olmos, was simply breathtaking for the first two seasons combining deep issues with epic space battles. Once the focus switched more evenly to the Cylons the show was never quite as consistent in terms of quality although there were still a number of fantastic episodes and the evolving battle between the Cylons and humans certainly ensured viewers continued to tune in.

If you've never seen Battlestar Galactica don't be put off by the sci-fi setting as this is as deep, complex and entertaining as any of the best drama shows of its generation and is definitely one to watch.

i watched the mini-series then seasons 1-3.huge,huge fan.great stories, superb effects for a tv show.dark, violent, brutal, post 9/11,virtually no humour,no kids or furry robots.an updating that worked like a charm.due to personal circumstances i never got to see season 4 so i purchased this set,not only does it have the mini-series but also the excellent "razor".all the episodes are here and its a superb box set to own.not sure why season 4 is split into two parts "season 4" and "the final season" but thats a minor quibble....

 Regarding Extras

There's some reviews on here bemoaning the absence of extras.
THEY ARE THERE.
Thought they are in odd places. A decent menu pamphlet might have been good, but as it is you'll just have to look at the menus disc for disc. It's all there, you just have to look for it.

All that being said - I knocked a star of for the less than stellar picture quality - grainy for a blu-ray. Zulu, a 1964 film was actually a better dvd to blu-ray port believe it or not!

 Sensational sci-fi

I missed this series when it first hit our screens, but after a friend gave me the first feature length episode I instantly became hopelessly addicted.
Having grown up in the 1980s I remembered the saturday afternoon showings of the original BG and imagined that the new series would be in a similar vein - a cheerful, light hearted romp through the stars, but how wrong I was! The new BG is dark and satirical, dealing with political issues as pertinent as terrorism, the clash between secular and faith-based socities and the ever present anxiety over new technologies, multiculturalism and changing value systems, which in my book is exactly what good sci-fi should do. BG is a wonderful series and well worth watching. I've happily returned for second and third viewings so I would say the re-watch value is high. It's a lengthy series and some elements do get worn away by writers trying to stretch certain storylines, but overall this has to be one of the best sci-fi series I have ever seen. Despite being a new take on the BG franchise there are plenty of oblique references to the original series plus cameo performances from some of the original cast. The interstella battles and constantly evolving Cylon/human relations and relationships keeps you guessing until the last episode. In my opinion this is a must-have collection. Enjoy.

 Missing the special features!

Just got my copy of the DVD boxset and it has no special features at all except for a few deleted scenes. Can't find The Resistance webisodes, commentries, etc. Doesn't appear to have the extended episodes either..

As an example, the American boxset contained 6 discs for Season Three but UK boxset only has 5.

Not impressed!

 Better than The Wire

It has been repeatedly said that if this wasnt a sci-fi show, it would be described as the best show on TV. Forget the original, this is nothing like that. Dark, brooding, it explores religion, the war on terror. It was the only US TV show to look at suicide bombing from the point of view of the other side.

An absolutely amazing series with amazing dialogue and not too scared to explore the dark recesses of the human race. £90 odd pounds is cheap for the whole series.

 The best 'frackin' show around...

Battlestar Galactica is a rare TV show, its astonishing and mesmerising and to be honest utterly depressing, but don't let that put you off TV's best drama around.

Although the show is set in the future where the human race has been exterminated by the very machines they have created (the cylons) it has a lot of reflections on today's society and economic state from current tragedies of terrorism and economic disasters to both religious and political stances of today's world, which makes the drama even more gripping.

There is not one weak season, all are as great as each other with excellent storylines, gripping characters and explosive action. This is very different to the show you remember as a child, it has made some, actually the whole show has changed, it has no resemblance to the original series except for character names, but the most controversial change was the sex of pilot; StarBuck, no longer a man but a strong woman played by an excellent Katee Sackoff, which actually probably wouldn't have worked if the character was cast as a man.

Every cliff-hanger of each season is just as dramatic as the last, the most notable was the mid-season cliff-hanger for season four, I wont say nothing to spoil it but it is one of the most powerful twists to a show that puts the drama in dramatic. Every episode, at the beginning, has a human counter, counting down the number of survivors as people are lost and sometimes found, adding more to the depressing element of the show; Human mortality.

It's a very powerful show that will have you hooked all the way through its four seasons, one of the best TV dramas ever made actually, and the tin box-set is very cool, well worth the price.
