Review

Two of Britain’s foremost creative talents, director Stephen Frears (High Fidelity, Dangerous Liaisons, and writer Jimmy McGovern (Cracker, Hillsborough), collaborate for the first time in this deeply passionate and moving drama. Growing up in Liverpool in the 1930s, seven-year-old Liam is the youngest child of a loving and close-knit family. Money is tight, but his life is a happy one; his mother is caring and devout, and his father (Ian Hart) is a proud working man. But when the ravages of the Great Depression hit the Liverpool docks, Liam’s father loses his job and, helpless and embittered, he embarks upon a desperate course of action that changes Liam’s world forever.

“A passionate drama bursting with humour and affection… a more intimate viewing experience than Angela’s Ashes”- Variety.
