The surface attraction of school kids culling each other whilst babysat by Beat Takeshi Kitano on a deserted island divides public opinion into disgust and delight. The violence is graphic and brutal, but who has driven these children to such base levels of depravity? Because children is the correct term we are dealing with. Not monster or villain but child. It is easy to take the tabloid view and demonise an entire generation but the majority only learn what they are taught.Fukasaku has the foresight for an old man to document the three day battle as a microcosm of human life and the development of the children into the adults they would have become given the chance. Some become murderers, some leaders, some cowards. Others show a capacity for love and compassion, others hatred and loathing. In short, none should be written off so early in life as they might surprise their supposed elders and betters, and no child should be made to pay for the sins and mistakes of their parents.
