'Artificial Intelligence' is the story of David (Haley Joel Osment), the first mecha (a futuristic term for a mechanized human being) designed with the ability to love. A couple whose son is in a coma "adopts" David to help them recover from their loss. Naturally, things do not go as planned, and David is forced to leave the mother (Frances O'Connor) he's been "imprinted" to love, and make his way in the world. Traveling with Teddy, a hi-tech stuffed bear, David escapes the Flesh Fair, where angry humans destroy mechas to "purge artificiality," and unexpectedly befriends Gigolo Joe (Jude Law), a robot designed to pleasure women. Joe agrees to help David in his quest to become human.

Director Stanley Kubrick originally developed A.I., at one point asking Spielberg to direct it. When Kubrick passed away, Spielberg took the reins. Using a treatment and thousands of drawings commissioned by Kubrick, Spielberg wrote his own screenplay (his first since 1979's 'Close Encounters Of The Third Kind').

One of the Legendary Stanley Kubricks's dream projects directed by Steven Speilberg.
The film is at time very sad story Love & Belonging
It's a little cold at times, but also has Speilbergs trademark schmaltz at times, which I'm sure Kubrick would have avoided.
The ending comes in for a bit of slack, but I personally liked it.
Haley Joel Osment was Exceptional, and I personally felt he should have got a nomination at the Oscars that year.
Jude Law was very good in a strange kinda role.
It is very well Directed and has some Brilliant Effects
Overall it's not going to be everyones thing but I think it is an engaging and thoughtful experience and definitely worth a watch

 Moving futuristic film

I must confess i never much fancied watching this but for some reason or another i ended updoing so and i am really pleased i did! Its not often a film touches me but this film managed to. The basic story being a robot boy gets adopted by a couple who several years later have a real child and as they grow up the two boys do not get along so the couple choose to ditch the robot boy in a wood miles away and move on with their life! The robot boy then goes on a journey to find how to become a real boy so his adoptive parents love him as much as their real son.Haley Joel Osment is just fantastic as the robot boy . One fault is there is not much happiness in the film its all very sad with a touching ending neither happy or sad. Still an unbelievably moving ,well acted movie that i would give 3.5 stars but close to 4 stars

 An underrated classic...

A lot of criticism has been levelled at AI, many people labelling it as Spielberg's low point. Myself, I consider it one of his best, channelling the spirit of Stanely Kubrick into a modern fable of Pinnochio-esque quality. Haley Joel Osment (remember him?) is perfectly cast as David the robot boy, ably supported by Jude Law in full-on charm mode as Gigolo Joe. Featuring some quite breathtaking special effects the adventures of David are full of horrors and delights and the film is never less than gorgeous to look at. Split into three distinct sections (very Kubrick) the finale, set years in the future, has caused much controversy with many reviewers saying it should have been removed entirely. And while I'll agree that Spielberg films do often suffer from badly judged endings (esp. Minority Report) I was perfectly happy with the conclusion which was both sad and hopeful at the same time. Spielberg and sci-fi have always been a good match but this somewhat quirky entry into his canon proves there's not many directors around today who can match Spielbergs storytelling and directing skills...

 Good for insomnia

At the cinema people were actually walking out. I'm surprised to see it's only 2 hours 20 mins - felt like twice that, so in some respects a value DVD.

If only they ended it about 30 mins before, it could have scraped through as a passable film. They didn't though and it is pants.

Blade Runner or I Robot (even Bicentennial Man) if you want futuristic.

 Speilberg at his best.

I don't know how so many people can criticise a film of such a great calibre. I've seen this film five times over the past 8 years and each time, I find it amazing. From the vast array of comments, I'd say just pick it up and watch it yourself to see what yout hink. I was going to buy it but as a student £15 is too precious to waste on any DVD - no matter how good it is. :p
