This is one of my Top 5 films of all time!

What a great film! Principally it is a tale of Mario (a simple man) and his interest / infatuation with Pablo Neruda (a famous Chilean poet who is exiled in Italy). The relationship that develops between them is un-balanced and mainly one way - Mario idolises Pablo and desperately wanting to be his friend, but the feelings aren't reciprocated.

The dialogue between the two is very simple, with a nice humour running through - but is also at times very thought provoking, with deep poignancy. Many of the lines are truly memorable eg. "Even the most sublime ideas sound ridiculous if heard too often", "Man has no business with the simplicity or complexity of things", "Poetry doesn't belong to those who write it, it is for those who need to use it" to name but three - and they all mean even more when in context.

The central character Mario generates great empathy throughout. He has such low self-esteem and thinks of himself as a nobody, leaving you feeling very protective towards him, as he tries to comprehend the ways of the world and work things out in his simple way.

Mario develops confidence as he learns from the poet about love and life, and it's a great moment when he wins Beatrice's heart - as you're constantly wanting good things to happen to him.

The climax hits you hard - as it is feels a bit unexpected - but the film finally ends on a reflective note, which leaves you thinking...

Overall it's an emotional film, with an interesting political vibe. Oh, and its a great viewing experience too! - The Italian coastline is a great backdrop to the story.
