A brilliant film, a classic black comedy. A group of war-eager military men plan a nuclear apocalypse that is both funny and frightening - and seems as relevant today as ever. Through a series of military and political accidents, two psychotic generals - U.S. Air Force Commander Jack D. Ripper (Sterling Hayden) and Joint Chief of Staff "Buck" Turgidson (George C. Scott) - trigger an ingenious, irrevocable scheme to attack Russia's strategic targets with nuclear bombs. The brains behind the scheme belong to Dr. Strangelove (Peter Sellers), a wheelchair-bound nuclear scientist who has bizarre ideas about man's future. The President is helpless to stop the bombers, as is Captain Mandrake (Sellers again), the only man who can stop them...

Never has a black comedy been so frightening in it's own right with this Cold War farce. Kubrick started it off as a serious drama but it ended up as a comedy because he found Mutual Assured Distruction (MAD) so silly! Made at the time when the madness going on, this is brave film making and he doesn't hold back. Peter Sellers is absolutely fantastic as 3 completely different characters, he was even cast to do 4! But Slim Pickens was hired to play his other penned role, Major King Kong who infamously takes to the role as the western bomber who rides a nuclear bomb to the ground. A nuclear apocalypse easily set off somehow by a deranged American Captain Ripper, a person who has so much hatred towards the Soviets for limiting his sperm count, and the salvation to the code lies in the coin tank of a Coca Cola Machine! If you don't understand what the Cold War was about, it wouldn't be suited to you, but this is black comedy at it's best.

Seldom Has the End of the World Been So Hilarious.

"Dr Strangelove" was made in 1964, only two years after the Cuban Missile crisis which almost led to World War Three. The Cold War, however, is now long over, meaning that the film has lost much of its topicality. Even so, it's still a remarkable piece of work by virtue of its performances. Famously Peter Sellers plays three different parts but the prize for the funniest performance goes to George C Scott as General Buck Turgidson, a five star numskull whose philosophy seems to be "nuke first and ask questions later". Also hilarious is Slim Pickens as a nuclear bomber pilot whose first action upon learning that America and the Soviet Union are at war is to take off his flying helmet and put on a Stetson! From an opening like this, riding the nuclear bomb like a bucking broncho is a tragic inevitability.

Also of note are the great sets - the film was followed four years later by "2002: A Space Odyssey" - and Kubrick's fascination with machinery and procedure - the audience almost feel as if they are in the B52 bomber as it flies towards the end of the world.

"Dr Strangelove" is a film where Kubrick's remote, clinical style is perfectly suited to the grim subject matter and results in a great many laugh-out-loud moments. The film is a superb testament to so many of the great talents involved no longer with us. Buy it and you'll see why.

A great film with a cast of characters obsessed with sex. Magor Kong goes to his death riding a Phallic bomb.General Ripper`s over riding concern is about commie laxatives in the water supply. Dr Strangelove suggests male survivors of the bomb should retreat to an underground bunker with 10 fit young females per man to replenish the human race.Kubrick at his most twisted & inventive as well as being Peter Seller`s finest hour. The infantile ludicrousness of war displayed in all it`s ridiculous finery.

     One of kubrick's finest films

The film is a great black comedy and one of Peter Sellers best films, how he didnt win an oscar for his roles in the film, i dont know. If you like Kubrick films you will like this.
