  Picking up the pieces

After the third movie which Michael Myres was absent from Halloween got back on top form continuing the story of his murderous rampage.

Unfortunatly Jamie Lee Curtis would not return for this installment and so Michael returns to finish off his bloodline with child Jamie (Daneille Harris, who also stars in Mr.Zombies rehash of the franchise), the body count is higher, the jumps keep coming and Dr.Loomis returns to thwart Michael's rampage.

It certainly has a creepiness about but lacks in jump scares and goes for the gross out violent nature of the killer thus losing some of its tension. The director obviously knew he had to salvage what he had lost with the diabolical that was Halloween 3 so decided to pump out the blood.

The last few minutes of the movie add a few more scares with a serious little twist that ends the entire movie perfectly, its not as satisfying as the original and part 2 but will keep you entertained and still want more from Michael.

Being an uncontrolable Halloween freak (first of all forget everything you've heard about people saying that this film is rubbish or its a terrorible sequele) cause seriously they don't know any about amazing film-making, ultra-suspense and awesome deaths...this is one of my favourite films and Halloween films ever made...it has more of an impact on me than most of films cause of its time period of release 1988 which was the year i was born so watching now I can never get bored, I'm always entertained by this movie again, again and again, starring my favourite actress of all time Danielle Harris in her most popular role of all time Jamie Lloyd which she continued again in Halloween 5: the Revenge Of Michael Myers (another favourite of mine), also starring the late Donald Pleasence as Michael's insain doctor Sam Loomis which is again a favourite to the Halloween series. Halloween 4: The Return Of Michael Myers does what it says on the title the film-makers brought Myers back from a 10 year coma after being burnt to death in Halloween 2, took him back to his hometown of Haddonfield with a target in mind and ready to slay a host of fresh new teens and several police officers along the way. The man behind the mask is George Wilbur who once again plays Myers in Halloween 6: The Curse Of Michael Myers...in this film he scared the living daylights out of me and he will do the same to you. This is a timeless classic which will leave you in terror and amazingness...CHECK IT OUT

One of the weakest in the series

| | See all Darkstar's reviews (87)

The Return of Michael Myers but unfortunately not a return to form. After a one film gap (the bizarre Halloween 3: Season of the Witch) Michael returns to Haddonfield to reek his revenge on the good townsfolk. However the film suffers on major draw back, it isn't very good. Let's start with Michael Myers himself who seems to walk around as though he has no neck (how high are his shoulders), not really conveying 'pure evil' as Dr Loomis calls it. Especially when you compare him to either the first two films, or even the later entries in the series this is by far the worst looking 'Shape' of things to come. Then there is the mask which looks ridiculously and nowhere near as scary as it does in the original.

The story itself centres around Michaels niece and his attempts to find and kill her. After 10 years in a confined Psycho prison he decides, on being transferred somewhere else, that he actually quite likes the killing business and starts killing again. However the deaths are both poorly executed and not very imaginative, plus you don't really get to see much which if done properly could have worked in its favour. This film was made in 1988 and films like Hellraiser (1987) had been released a year earlier which started the new wave of horror. This film in comparison, and especially compared to the first two films, is very dull and has no originality. Save for one or two nice moments (the starting credits are probably the best part) this is very disappointing.

Probably the worst bit for me was the extremely ill conceived ending which made a mockery of the original and only seemed to be done as they couldn't think of anything else. The acting is the usual for this type of film and doesn't hinder the story too much (although Dr Loomis does over egg it on occasions). But it is the poor directing and production which lets this film down.

The main reason for watching this film is that it feeds on directly to the next two, much better films and so you need to know what has gone before, however this will largely be an enjoyable experience and you won't probably So in generally this should be for completists only or those who will watch anything. Those who have more discerning tastes should look at other entries in the series.

  good sequal

This is one of the best Sequals in the Halloween franchise. I thought the girl in it was a really good actress. I know good actress and horror seems like a contradiction. I also thought the ending was a good twist.

  WELCOME HOME MICHAEL !

It seems that Michael did not die in the fire at the end of Halloween 2, he has been in a coma for the past six years. Poor Lori Strode as died in the six years since, leaving her Daughter. So Michael awakens and goes on another killing frenzy, hunting down his neice. The film is more of the same, but lacking the class of parts one and two. What really saves the film is a brilliant roof top sequence, and the excellent Donald Pleasence, again playing Doctor Loomis. Also it's nice to hear the electronic score back in the film, for the added menace. A worthy addition to the Halloween collection !
