For thirteen extroardinary days in October 1962, the world stood on the brink of an unthinkable catastrophe. Across the globe, people anxiously awaited the outcome of a harrowing political, diplomatic and military confrontation that had threatened to end in apocalyptic nuclear exchange between the United States and the Soviet Union.

In Thirteen Days, the power and the peril of the American presidency is dramatically explored by director Roger Donaldson, who captures the urgency, suspense and paralysing chaos of the Cuban Missile Crisis.

The alarming escalation of events during those fateful days brought to the fore such public figures as Robert McNamara, Adlai Stevenson, Theodore Sorenson, Andrei Gromyko, Anatoly Dobrynin, McGeorge Bundy, Dean Acheson, Dean Rusk, and General Curtis LeMay. In addition, many others - politicians, diplomats and soldiers were on the front line of the showdown. In Thirteen Days, we see all of these people, and, above all, President John F. Kennedy and his brother Bobby, through the eyes of a trusted presidential aide and confidante, Kenneth P. O'Donnell (Kevin Costner).

This is a very underrated fact based movie about the Cuban missile crisis. It may sound a boreing subject matter, but this film a suspense packed retelling of the facts. Costner has never been better as the advisor to Bruce Greenwoods Kennedy. We all know the outcome, but I never realised the world was on such a knife edge for two weeks. The film plays the facts true, and never puts a foot wrong as the worsening situation spirals out of control. This is a real must see thriller, and a brilliant history lesson. Also the second disc contains an amazing documentary about the cold war and it' s origins.
I advise anybody body to buy this double disc as for this price you get a excellent film, and a brilliant documentary.
A history lesson we have to learn by. and amazing value for money.

As this film was massively underrated, you're probably only looking this review if you're really interested in the Cuban Missile Crisis or the Kennedys.

Buy it, you wont be disappointed. This has become one of my favourite films of all time.

For me, the story of the crisis itself comes second to the story of the relationships between the key players.

Kevin Costner manages, for once, to act fairly well despite a dodgy accent. The actor who plays JFK does an outstanding job.

    An excellent film.

I have watched this movie many times and it still grips my attention. I'm old enough t remember these events and the newsreels. How close we came indeed. Excellent portrayals from al the actors - especially Bruce Greenwood as JFK

I needn't have saved this for a slow day to watch. This is not a 'Sunday movie' - instead it's a brilliantly acted and fast-paced real world thriller about the razor-wire knife edge of danger the US and USSR walked when they faced off over whether to allow Soviet nukes to stay in Cuba within 5 minutes of the US. Incredibly tense, with action scenes that feel authentic and great performances from all the leads, especially a hard-nosed Costner and an agonised Greenwood as Kennedy.
