  A prawn cracker!

Blomkamp's darkly comic, intelligent satire is also hugely entertaining and contains a tour-de-force performance from the unknown lead Sharlto Copley. Although the allegory is thinly veiled, and the logic somewhat flawed, it still packs a significant punch. The movie deals with themes we're all familiar with but adds a freshness to the mix by placing a stranded alien race at the heart of the matter. There's lots of gore, lots of profanity, lots of energy, and lots of humour. And the message is thoughtfully constructed: the lead character's dramatic and poignant epiphany is all the more believable because of his conflicted viewpoint. It's also worth mentioning the effects, which are impressive given the apparently modest budget. Excellent and worthy of 4.5/5.

What a refreshing change an alien invasion in south Africa of all places, I had always thought aliens would invade washington or Los Angeles or new York .. Not jo'burg

Anyway the prawns are the bottom scroungers and treated like animals, some scenes that remind you of the apartheid but this time of aliens .. Brilliantly filmed and thought out, and a great lead

Awful movie, with decent special effects

This was one of the worst movies i have seen in the past 10 years, after the hype and the build up, it was a huge let down. Like watching a poorly filmed and scripted documentary. I really can't see how anybody could give 5* to this movie. The only reason i gave it 2* rather then 1* was the special effects were decent. Awful waste of 2 hours of your life, don't do it to yourself.

A Truly Original and Exciting Sci-Fi Thriller

An alien race, known by the human population as 'prawns', have been forced to live in a militarized zone in Johannesburg called District 9 for 28 years following their arrival on Earth. Confined to poverty tensions are starting to mount and a munitions company are contracted to forcibly remove the 'Prawns' to a distant compound.

Finding an original premise for an alien movie is a tough task but District 9 certainly manages it. Shot in documentary style it is able to present a far grittier look at how humans may react to the arrival of an alien species than your average Hollywood Blockbuster. In fact it is easy to draw parallels with the real-life treatment of citizens that have lived in South Africa through the apartheid.

If that all sounds like heavy going don't be put off as District 9 also works as an exciting sci-fi thriller. While some of the bad guys may be a little cliched the movie features some fantastically shot action scenes and excellent special effects throughout. This all makes for a fascinating movie that is more than worth two hours of anyones time.

distrcit 9 is really quite an interesting film it shows how if aliens where to visit or get lost and stop off on our planet it shows a more gentle side to how us humans would take care of the aliens and show them we care by putting them up in large camp sites they show that the aliens are smarter than we think they are just because they eat cat food dont make them dumb they trade their weapons to us humans for cat food knowing our DNA wont activate any of the weapins. the story is a bit long and drawn out about some guy show is trying to keep the aliens in check and finds the fuel for the ship and it squirts him in the face slowly turning him into one of "the prawns" as we like to call them all in all not too bad its watchable in a sense of the unknown and these aliens could at anytime destroy all mankind and we still help them i begin to wonder if there will be a number 2 as the poor guy now turned alien will ever be human again who knows......?
