  Wherefore art thou Romeo?

| | See all BAB33RUBY's reviews (13)

Beautiful. I tried to watch this in my youth but found the Shakespearian language too hard to handle. I gave it a second chance very recently and was blown away by this updated version of the classic story of Romeo and Juliet.

The acting and casting are spot on with Leo and Claire amazing in the lead roles and I feel as if the late Pete Postlethwaite deserves a shout out for his brilliant contribution.

I found myself crying at several parts, not only for the heartbreaking ending but also for the love shared between the 'star-crossed lovers.'

The action sequences revolving around the two warring families are phenomenal, especially when contrasted with the love scenes between Romeo and Juliet.

Lastly, I think the film deserves recognition for the filming and some of the shots taken, notably one involving Romeo and a gun, but I won't give any more away on that topic although do look out for it.

If you haven't already seen Romeo + Juliet I highly suggest it, if not for everything I've mentioned then at least to hear the perfect soundtrack which accompanies it.

  enormously powerful

very overwhelming from start till the end. and in between a great traditional love story told in an untraditional way: very flashy, very kitschy, very up tempo but with the original textphrases... witch produces an ingeneous result.
once you get used to the original phrasing, and together with the very strong soundrack (wich stands perfectly well on its one on cd!) this movie carries on like a rollercoaster.
be my guest: watch it and you'll love it.

  Supercharged Shakespeare

| | See all RJNeb2's reviews (637)

Shakespeare is all about the words. But Baz Luhrmann has a very different take on it, pumping this umpteenth version of the tragedy to the gills with dynamic visuals, colour, energy, the kitchen sink. It's the most invigorating version of the Bard you're likely to see, breathlessly exuberant and wickedly inventive. And even with all the pomp and glitz, it's still has room for a very affecting climax. Killer soundtrack too.

  Shakespeare for the MTV generation.

This Version of the classic Shakespeare story is like a firecracker
exploding in your face. It oozes a certain arrogance and energy that is not
normally associated with "The Most Romantic Story ever told"
Just watched this again after 13 years on DVD., and it still easily holds up.
The acting was top notch, showing Di Caprio's potential before he became a Superstar.
I didn't understand a lot of the Shakepearean language,
But that did not matter as it was all very obvious, and this was very much a Visual Spectacle.
Also the Soundtrack was Spot on, especially the track "Kissing You" by Des're.

  An Awesome Adaptation

| | See all LeeLeeMo's reviews (15)

Luhrmanns vision is truly breath taking! An excellent adaptation of the 'star cross'd lovers' with a great cast and brilliant soundtrack! It is very true to Shakespeare's original text, with with only the smallest amount cut out. So whether you are a Shakespeare lover or not, its well worth the watch! This fast moving, tear jerking and oh so dramatic film will make you think twice about choosing Meyer over Shakespeare!

  Fantastic

I must have seen this adaptation 5 times by now, but everytime it overwhelms me and brings me to tears. The modern backdrop makes it more accessible for those not into classic literature, and despite the use of the original shakespearian language it is relatively easy to follow and understand what is going on. I am not a huge fan of Leonardo Dicaprio, as I feel that the fame of actors can make their roles less believable, yet both Romeo and Juliet in this film are utterly believable; their love seems so intense and their pain even more so dispairing. Definitely recommended.

  Great Film

This is one of the best re-makes of the most best and greatest classic love film ever! and shows it in great detail and is great for GCSE as it gives them a clear idea of the film without it being to complicated to trying to understand!
