Although not without its faults (the costumes are far too neat and tidy and the dialogue is sometimes delivered unconvincingly), this is nevertheless an accomplished piece of film making and one which even now is quite shockingly violent in places. But not only is the film visually disturbing but morally also, forsaking as it does a triumphalist ending in favour of one that leaves a very unpleasant taste in the mouth.
The film is first and foremost Vincent Prices, who gives a superbly understated performance as the Witchfinder of the title, a sadistic charlatan who uses superstition and circumstance to further his quest for financial gain and sexual gratification. But while it may be Prices film, there are some other good performances, most notably Hilary Dwyer as the greatly abused love interest. Watching her here, its something of a pity that she didnt achieve greater prominence.
This may not always be the easiest film to watch but it is nevertheless one that you should buy.
