The eighth wonder of the world.

It is 1933, and vaudeville actress Ann Darrow (Oscar nominee Naomi Watts) has found herself - like so many other New Yorkers during the Great Depression - without the means to earn a living. Unwilling to compromise and allow herself to sink into a career in burlesque, she considers her limited options while aimlessly wandering the streets of Manhattan. When her hunger drives her to unsuccessfully try to steal an apple from a fruit vendor's stall, she is rescued - literally - by filmmaker and multiple hyphenate Carl Denham (Jack Black).

It seems that the entrepreneur-raconteur-adventurer is no stranger to theft, having that day lifted the only existing print of his most recent and unfinished film from under his studio executives' noses when they threatened to pull his completion funds. Carl has until the end of the day to get his crew onboard the Singapore-bound tramp steamer, the S.S. Venture, in hopes of completing his travelogue/action film. With that, the showman is certain he will finally achieve the personal greatness he knows awaits him around the corner - and although the crew believe that corner to be Singapore, Denham actually hopes to find and capture on film the mysterious place of legend: Skull Island.

Unfortunately for Carl, his headlining actress has pulled out of his project, but his search for a size-four leading lady (the costumes have all been made) has, fatefully, led him to Ann. The struggling actress is reluctant to sign on with Denham, until she learns that the up-and-coming, socially relevant playwright Jack Driscoll (Oscar winner Adrien Brody) is penning the screenplay - the fees his friend Carl pays for potboiling adventure are a welcome supplement to Driscoll's nominal income from his stage plays.

With his newly discovered star and coerced screenwriter reluctantly onboard, Denham's 'moving picture ship' heads out of New York Harbor... and toward a destiny that none aboard could possibly foresee...

This movie is absolutely brilliant and looks amazing on High Definition!!! If you had to choose any movie to showcase the quality of HD DVD, this would be the number one choice as well as Transformers.

I have only just got me HD dvd player well I have a XBOX360 HD Player I have 10 films... and got this because it was supposed to be one of the best HD films.. Well They aint wrong the first thing you notice about KING KONG HD is how clear everything is.. its just so clear... infact in some scenes with the dinosaur stampede its too clear and shows up the special effects to much..but who's complaining...the scene with the T REX's and Kong are awesome!!!!!!!!!

 One of the beast HD-DVDs

Sorry about the pun but this is one of the best early HD-DVD releases, amazing depth to the picture that really adds to the action, bit lacking in the extras department but all in all this should form part ofs the foundations of any decent HD collection

 Superb Introduction to HD

This was my first proper HD-DVD - whilst I'd played plenty of HD games and downloaded content on my Xbox 360, I hadn't actually watched any disks.

I got the HD-DVD Drive for my Xbox and also purchased King Kong and Van Helsing, admittedly because they were both cheap.

I have to say, I was absolutely delighted with King Kong, both as a film and as an HD experience. Some of the opening scenes are actually very ordinary, but are jaw droppingly good in HD. There is a scene that shows lines of vehicles driving over a bridge, it lasts about 20 seconds at the most, but it is amazing, you can pick out tiny cars off in the distance with such clarity and depth you suddenly understand what all the fuss about HD is actually about. This continues through the whole film, the digital grading that is applied works tremendously with a wonderful grey feel about the cities that gets progressivly darker as the film goes on, but despite this, individual colours and highlights show through perfectly.

The film is a great romp and I actually enjoyed it very much indeed, Jack Black is as ever great and the other characters all seem nicely in place and fit their roles well. King Kong himself isn't bad, it's not an easy thing to animate and in some scenes the lighting of the model doesn't quite match the lighting of the actors but it's fairly minor and doesn't really detract.

It's a superb example of HD and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I had the regular DVD of this movie since its release, today i got it on HD DVD and altho the picture on regular DVD is great this is even better, the picture quality is stunning, especially Kongs rampage in New York.. This is what HD is all about! oh and the movie is a pretty good remake of an old classic too, keeps the look and feel or the original in many ways and thank goodness Peter Jackson kept it set in the same time as the original and didnt try and set it in todays wold... Excellent movie, excellent on regular DVD and even better on HD DVD.. Shame about the lack of extra features tho but it left more room on the DVD for a better transfer.
