I have also read a detailed review of the US HDDVD release which described this as one of the worst packages ever released as the discs regularly come loose in transit and get badly scratched. Additionally the mastering of the discs was supposed to be exceptionally poor. I'm a huge BSG fan and hope that the european release will address both these issues but I won't be ordering this until I see a trustworthy review of the quality. (Please see High Def Digest site for a detailed review.)

Don't get me wrong, I'm a HUGE fan of this series and have the first 3 series on DVD with the mini-series and Battlestar Razor too and I was excited when I heard it was coming to HDDVD as I was very tempted to buy it (being a bit odd with the whole "needing things to be perfect if they can be" thing) BUT I have heard very bad things with the USA release of this box set, with VERY poor packaging scratching a lot of the discs and resulting in a lot of people having to take them back or putting up with broken-up pictures in areas and fractured sound.

I have no idea if these issues have been solved with the UK release or not, but personally I am going to wait to see the reviews from people who have bought this here and see if they had problems before forking out.

Like I say, this is an absolutely superb reimagining of an old favourite, but I thought it was worth mentioning the packing issue just in case - hence removing two stars to make people read this!!

Customer rating: 4 out of 5 stars UK Packaging Is Fine

I have the UK version and the packaging is fine, just a normal 6 disc fold-out box set, nothing fancy and no problems. The picture has a lot of grain, but is still better than a plain DVD, lip sync is badly off in a couple of places. Despite that, main point is that BSG series 1 is awesome, highly recommended. There are plenty of extra features and interviews on every disc, presented with U-Control and picture-in-picture. HD DVD prices are erratic now, so it pays to shop around.

I bought this on Hd from America, and yes one disc was scratched, fortunately it does play ok. I always find the film grain defeats the object of high def, as it does seem a tad overdosed on Battlestar. One of the episodes has an absolute abissmal conversion, with the lip sync being totally out from about half way through. BUT I absolutely love Battlestar so had to buy this when it first came out. In truth though I would have stuck to the ordinary DVD version than splashing out on HD.

Customer rating: 5 out of 5 stars BSG - best show on tv

If you haven't yet savoured this reimagining of the classic (yet dated) show then it's time to get on board! This new Battlestar Galactica is leaps and bounds ahead of all the other remakes and reimaginings out there in tv and movie land.

There are many parallels between BSG and the post 911 world we live in today. The attack on the twin towers and resulting media coverage provided a catalyst for how BSG would be presented and blur the lines between the so-called 'good' surviving members of the human race and the purportedly 'evil' Cylons.

But enough of my rambling, the fact is, this is killer tv with a very adult slant (genocide/religion/rape) on a cheesy ol' sci-fi show which can now be enjoyed in HD.

If you haven't yet experienced BSG then this is a first rate must by!
