I was extremely disapointed with this DVD recorder. I am a HUGE fan of Sony, but this just isn't up to scratch.
The dual tuner is a fraud, you can't record a digital channel and watch another? is that not what dual tuner is? With sony, dual tuner means 1 Digital and 1 Analogue, meaning you can record freeview and then watch an analogue channel (1,2,3,4 or 5) does anyone out there still use analogue?
DIVX - you can't watch divx videos from the USB port, major dissapointment, you also can't watch a DIVX CD or DVD while recording onto the hard drive.
I am connecting to my 40" sony LCD, yet I kept getting warning signs saying 'TV in incompatible setting' the troubleshooting guide or website couldn't help with this.
Even with a HDMI connection the Menu's are blury and have no graphics at all, just a simple boring generic blue background, not even any screensavers or animations for when using the media jukebox function. (the jukebox function did work ok, you can copy music from a USB flash drive (although VERY slow), the only shame with this is the screens for playing the music are again dull). None of the screens are very user friendly, I had a 32" CRT TV from sony about 5 years ago that had a better TV Guide built in, that had preview screens etc. this one is bland, has no features and difficult to use.
The 455 hours recording time it states is also pointless, at this compression it's blotchy and the sound is distorted, standard compresison is ok which gives about 70 hours recording.
The playback menu for pre-recorded TV is pretty good, it gives previews in a mini screen of what you've recorded, probably the only thing I actually liked about this.
No HDMI Cable included, these cost less than £1 to manufacture, come on Sony, set the standard!
The remote is almost identical to the remote for my very first sony DVD player, we're going back almost 10 years here. it's thick, bulky, boring, there doesn't seem to have been any change in technology.
Overall I feel like Sony are abusing us, for years they have set the standard and now they have developed a DVD recorder that uses the same menu's that panasonic used 2 years ago on their flagship hard drive range.
Sony haven't even tried, it's clearly cheap for what's inside, it's quite evident where they have cut the corners on this one though. I had mine a week before returing it.
