A better MP3 player than iPod - excellent sound quality

| | See all Richyboy's reviews (1)

I can truly say that this is an amazing machine. I have owed many MP3 players, and currently also owning an iPod, can give a this a very good comparative review. £120 when I purchased, it is well worth it. The main thing that stands out is sound quality! Using a half decent set of sennheiser headphones (always advisable to upgrade on any supplied accessories) you get a much nicer sound quality out of this Sony player compared to any iPod. Mainly due to a proper EQ adjustment, which is beautiful, you can get pleanty of bass out of it etc. Also it is much smaller and light-weight than I realised too. Sony have also improved their software (not using Sonic Stage which always used to get a slating) and it plays BBC iPlayer stuff great too. No question the best MP3 player I have ever owned!

 Quality bit of kit

I've been looking round for a good MP3 player with (for me) a more secondary use for playing video. Hence I considered the small screen here to be "adequate" for my needs (my job allows frequent short breaks so dipping into an episode of Top Gear is fine but a full length movie isn't going to happen). I have to say I am more than impressed by the clarity and quality of picture this little gem provides (Though I shouldn't be complety surprised, after all Sony have a good name for quality and innovation). Anyway, enough of the video, I bought this mainly for listening... The menus are intuitive and quickly navigated, the provided headsets fit well and give (to me in my 40's) excellent sound quality. Bonus treats include, Easy drag and drop via USB (no itunes or other software rqrd) good integration with the BBC iPlayer for pod casts and also (yet to be trully tested by me) a nice menu item allowing the player to try and match the music to your mood. Finally, VFM - Value for money. Fantastic! A 16gb quality player for under a ton?

 impressive player

I have had this player just over 4 days now and i have been really impressed with it.
The controls although not having the jog wheel of the ipod are still easy to use, having currently loaded just over 1000 songs on to it i and can still locate any track within a few seconds. The supplied headphones are far better than the any of the rivals stock headphones that I have heard, they carry a good amount of bass and avoid being over crisp.
Plugging in my Shure headphones and the sound really is startling, for my money a far superior sound to that of the ipod.
An excellent graphics equaliser and the bass enhancement system really allow you to taylor the sound to your tastes from full on Bass to clarity and crispness within a few seconds.

The system itself is small well built and with 40h continuous playback time on music just keeps going and going. With twice the storage of an ipod nano lower cost and better sound (not to mention nearly twice the playback time) if you are looking for a protable player in this range i would give the Sony very serious consideration.
The Video player works well and runs downloaded programs from iplayer pretty smoothly.
The biggest advantage of this player is all the different audio formats it will play compaired the the ipods AAC only. That means you can sync tracks (very quicky) onto it from Windows media player ... winamp.. pretty much most media players I've tried. So no need to install itunes and then spending ages converting everything to AAC format just to play it.
One last little thing is that the screen is flat unlike the nano so its viewable in bright sunlight! Its a small thing but avoids one of those little annoyances! Don't get me wrong I like ipods but this player really is very good, the ipod may edge this out on functionality but this will do pretty much everything you want it too and sound better in the process! I listened to the two players back to back there is enough of a difference on sound to make me buy the sony no question.

 Great mp3 player!

This mp3 player is really cool! Lots of memory, can fit around 3000 songs on, maybe a bit more. The video playback is great quality although the screen is a bit small but thats not a big problem.
One problem i had with it is that the software that came with it won't recognise my mp3 player when its connected to the computer...noone else seems to have the problem though so maybe its my computer...im wanting to create playlists but i cant because you cant do it through the mp3 player only through the software which isnt very good.
oh and also there is no adapter, you can only charge through a USB.
These reasons are why i give 4 and not 5.
Sound quality is great though and the price is pretty good too!

 Wonderful

Had this player for a few months now and have to say it's absolutely fantastic. I bought it after my Creative Zen packed in after a few heavy years use and can honestly say I wish the Zen had given up sooner.

The sound quality is as good as my Hitachi CD player, the display is crystal clear, syncing and setup is almost too easy and especially after the brick that was the Creative Zen you notice how convenient it is to have a small, lightweight player, and it really is so light that as it says 'you won't notice you're carrying it'. The battery life is simply brilliant, charged for 3 hours seems to be worth nearly 2 days of playback, and it saves power by switching off when paused and left unused for a shortwhile (which may sound inconvenient but when you see how it switches back on instantly at a touch you'll see it's nothing but good).

My only complaints would be that there is no mains charger to it, it can only be (as far as I know) charged by USB which isn't ideal if you want to leave it charging overnight or if you're away from home. The speed of 'creating library' after adding tracks to the player is a little sluggish although is only a one off on each occasion. Also the earphones provided I found to be uncomfortable and inconvenient, but the £5-20 spent on a decent set of earphones is easily made up for by the value for money here.
