15.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor
Canon's APS-C sized CMOS sensor delivers ultra-detailed, low-noise images - ideal for large-scale reproduction and creative cropping. Redesigned pixels with gapless micro lenses extend light gathering capability for exceptional performance throughout the ISO range.

6.3 fps continuous shooting
Perfect for sports, wildlife and action sequences, the EOS 50D captures 6.3 frames per second for continuous bursts of up to 90 JPEGs with a UDMA card.

DIGIC 4 is the EOS 50D's powerful processing engine, working with the CMOS sensor to deliver 14-bit image processing for smooth gradations and natural looking colours. Fast enough to power 6.3 fps continuous shooting, DIGIC 4 is also responsible for the EOS 50D's near-instant startup time and quick image review following shooting.

ISO range
For fast shutter speed shooting in low light, the EOS 50D features base ISO speeds to 3200, expandable to an ultra-sensitive 12800.

Clear View LCD
The 3.0" 920,000 dot VGA LCD screen offers exceptional clarity, perfect for checking the focus and composition of your images. The large viewing angle coupled with Live View mode makes photography at awkward angles a breeze.

Live View mode
Live View mode allows users to accurately frame images when using the viewfinder is impractical. The dedicated Live View button displays real-time images on the LCD, offering three types of auto focus: Quick AF, Live AF, and new Face Detection Live AF, which focuses based on faces detected in the frame.

Wide-area AF with 9 cross type points
The high-precision AF system employs 9 cross type points for precise focusing on both horizontal and vertical planes. The central AF point offers sensitivity up to f/2.8. Points are spread out across the AF frame to better accommodate off-centre subjects.

Magnesium alloy body
Built for demanding daily use, the EOS 50D's lightweight, durable magnesium alloy body incorporates environmental protection for performance you can rely on.

EOS Integrated Cleaning System
Canon's EICS combines special component materials to reduce dust generation, a fluorine coating on the low-pass filter to repel dust, and a Self-Cleaning Sensor Unit to shake dust free at power up/power down.

The EOS 50D is compatible with over 60 EF and EF-S lenses and all EX Series Speedlite flash units.

Decided to upgrade my wonderful eod400d and lenses. After reading quite a lot about it, I had decided against the 450d and would go for the 40d instead. However, after reading about this camera, I could not resist..... it was quite a lot more, but decided that I could buy this one and not need another camera for many years. If you do not already have good lenses, the starter kit with the 17-85 USM IS lens, good value combination. Only disadvantages compared to a lesser lens and the 400d is the size and weight, however feels much more stable and well built. Now down the the picture quality...... all I can say is AMAZING! Even in low light (a common eos flaw) this camera took great shots without the flash, crystal clear..... only had it a day or so, but convinced this was well worth every penny

 Excellent For The Price

Top 100 Mobile Reviewer

I previously owned a 300D and was unsure if to upgrade to the 550D, 7D or the 50D. All of which had various prices and features. The 50D sits happily in the middle of what I wanted. Uses CF and the Canon 511 battery.
The step in image quality to the 50D from the 300D is signficant as is the cameras ability to use lens.

Fantastic autofocus, improved metering, excellent modes allowing for the novice to move from scene modes "portrait", "sports" etc, through to Creatice Auto (which allows some simple customisation, through to the full customisation modes.

6 FPS shooting speed with a large JPG buffer. Even with my old 1GB CF the write rate to the CF is improved over my older camera. I have bought a 8GB UDMA CF which will allow 300x write speeds.

I didn't buy a kit. Instead I bought a 50mm f/1.8 MkII lens instead which is an excellent lens for the price and ideal for portrait photos.

The camera build quality is excellent and the weight is just right. Size of the camera is ideal for medium to large hands - is bigger than the 550D not as big at the 7D.

I strongly recommend this camera over the 7D (assuming the 8FPS and video aren't essential for you) and over the 550D (beginners camera with lesser build quality).
The saving in price over the 7D means you can buy some additional glass which will benefit you in the long run.

Highly recommended.

Best Semi-pro SLR on the Market.

The camera is superb, i would recommend it to anyone looking for a semi pro level camera. I currently use it with a Sigma 28-200mm a Canon 18-55mm and a Sigma 150-500mm and it gives excellent results with all. The 9 point auto focus is consistently sharp and accurate. The LCD screen is the sharpest i have seen on any camera, its a great size and allows you to zoom right in and get a really good idea about the quality of the image and to check the focus. Also the fast shooting mode of 6.3 frames per second is excellent for nature photography. There are plenty of other great features but i would be writing an essay.
All round its not cheap but it's worth every penny.
