A little word of warning, in azzyboi's review he mentions that this player (Toshiba HD-E1) outputs in 1080P. This is not the case!! This machine can only output in 1080i, which is still pretty good, but not the best that High Definition can offer (hence the relativly low price tag).
If you want the full HD experience, you need to look for a player that can display 1080P (progressive). The next model up from this (Toshiba HD-XE1) will display in 1080P. To be honest, the majority of viewers will not be able to tell the difference, but for those who need to have the best...
For the prioe you can now aquire this player - it's an absolute must!!! Its upscaling qulaities for standard def DVD's are awsome and you get to dip your toe into the world of HD-DVD to boot!!!
For standard DVD's its only Region 2 (for now) and the stories I read about slow boot up times and excessive fan noise are to say the least, 'excessive'!!! It easily boots up while youre fumbling around trying to remove the disc from its packaging and the fan noise is only audible in total silence!!!
It was easy to connect to my broadband connection in order to upgrade the firmware to the latest version. The whole process took about 20-30mins and was done by the time I finished taking the dog for a walk!!!
Build quality isn't on par with high end products of course but I was pleasently surprised to see it wasn't as flimsy as some budget products on the market.
So with some patience and a relitively low cost, start getting the most out of your HD TV today!!!
Then when better value, all performing HD-DVD/Blu-Ray combo players appear in a couple of years, go for one of those. Because as with DVD-Audio and SACD, there wont be any clear winner with this new format!!! Combo players are already appearing from LG and Samsung.
Buy and Enjoy!!!
First of all HD-DVD is the new format of DVD from Toshiba. HD DVD disks have higher capacity than standard DVD disks which allow them to store the large amount of data needed for HD films.
The HD-DVD player is nice and compact. It doesn't take up a lot of space. It's basically silent if you listen closely but when the sound of the film is playing you can't hear anything at all. The DVD player has a native resolution of 1080p, but can re-size the picture to 1080p/ 720p or 480p.
The sound output of the player is amazing. It's not like anything I've heard before. The HD-DVD player really makes me feel like I am in the film.
The sound and picture quality really bring films to life, and once you watch one film in HD, you will want to upgrade all of your favourites to HD! The great thing with HD DVD players is that they are al backwards compatible with DVD's. This means hat you can still play all of your films on this player! And the DVD player will also upscale the image to HD, but it wont be native and it may be jumpy and not as good quality at times but the really depends on the film because they might not have used a quality camera when filming.
The price of HD DVD is a much cheaper option to Blue-ray because the lasers of which are used cost more to produce. The disks are also cheaper on HD DVD for some films.
Overall the HD DVD Player looks and feels great. It looks sleek and expensive, and also gives you the chance to gloat to all of your friends and neighbours about having the latest equipment at a reasonable price! I would recommend this product to anyone because HD DVD is the future of home entertainment.
Before i had the chance of taking a look at how much of a difference HD DVD is compared to stand alone DVD, i was thinking, oh i know it will look better, but wow was i shocked when i saw it in the flesh, it was 100x better than i was thinking.
My brother has the fast and the furious: tokyo drift on dvd, i watched it the other day and noticed how pixelated it was on my old dvd player. Today when i watched the hd version on my new hd dvd player, the quality is shocking how much of a difference it is. Even looking close up its hard to notice the pixels at all, the quality is so crisp and clean its like the picture really is jumping out at you!
This player is quick, silent, slim, and stylish. HD is the wat forward and this is the perfect addition to anyones home cinema experience.
i brought a samsung blu ray player from currys, was not happy with it,as the films looked to soft,so i brought this hd player and a copy of the thing, and omg this is how i wanted hd to look great dvd player, much better than the samsung blu ray player, and much much cheaper
