An Excellent Digital TV Recorder for the Beginner

This is a solid bit of kit. Easy to setup, just plug in all the wires as explained in the manual and it scans then tunes in the channels for you. Every portion of the interface is menu driven, so its very easy to pick up how every aspect of this kit works. You have the choice of recording from the Episode Guide (and series link) or to set a timer. The timer has better options than a standard VCR. Which is great. Giving you more power to how you want to record. Replaying is just as easy. Its best feature is the ability to record simultaneously on two channels and watch something that you recorded earlier. All at the same time. Ive had no problems with either of these. Picture quality is excellent.

Have not used the music/media options yet, so Icant comment on those. And since its used with a standard analogue TV cant comment on the HDMI upscaling either.

I would have given this item a 5score, but there are a few issues that Ive found on experimenting with complicated use of the features. The first is that certain channels wont record if set to record using the Series link. Setting up series recrording on QUEST and ITV3 scrambles the recording timers set for other programmes. Also seems like it has crashed. Highly suspect that this has more to do with these particular channels, possibly being a problem with the signal strength in my area. This possibly caused a v. few occasions the recording to not stop when it was supposed to. This messed up the recording schedule of later programmes.

The unit is silent for the most part, but if you own an external hardrive which you use with a PC, you will know the clicking/chirping sound it makes when files are being saved or accessed. You get the same noise when the unit is recording. Not much of a problem if you are listening to the TV, but when its off, it can be heard.

One final minor issue is the inability to set more than one programme to record on the same channel, with the same name on the same day. I.e. If you want to record three different series/episodes of Red Dwarf to watch later on a Sunday, the EPG wont allow you to do it. It just sets up the first instance, the other two wont be recorded. You have to instead setup a timer for the duration of all three programmes. A real pain in the backside.

Otherwise, couldnt be happier with this basic model. Very easy to configure, use and maintain. The price is amazing. Perfect for the not so technical savvy.
