I have been searching for something like this for some
time. I wanted to improve the sound on my Samsung TV, I didn't
want DVD/Blu Ray player. I considered soundbars, but most
were as long as my TV, & I wasn't sure wether the sound
would be much better. I didn't want an AV receiver, because
it would have meant a receiver & a Sub Woofer, plus
speakers. So this suited me.
Sony HTAS5 5.1 Channel Satellite Speaker Surround Sound
System. Is a similar setup to the Onkyo, but the Sub was
larger, & the speakers, were too tall to sit on my TV
Now to the Onkyo. Overall I am very pleased.
It was easy to plug the leads in. HDMI, out to TV, & in my
case HDMI from my WDTV in. I have the 2.1 system, speaker
terminals on the Amp & speakers are coloured.
I am using cheap HDMI cables. My TV doesn't support HDMI
version 1.4, so I had to get an Optical cable (cheap) to
ensure, the sound changed from the TV to the WDTV when I
switched to that.
I like the OSD, but the Onkyo has a display on the front.
There are not many settings to setup the sound, ie no
equalizer. But you can do the normal,ie adjust output for
each individual speaker.
The sub, itself has the speaker underneath, so be careful
where you put your hands when you lift it. There is a grill
on top at the front, so don't leave things on it, that
could fall through. I have some reviews that mentioned the
noise of the fan. Well I can't hear mine. Also, people
complained about speech levels. Now someone has mentioned
it, I have found myself turning the sound up, to hear
speech, then other sounds are too loud. I have thought
about getting the Speaker upgrade package, but don't want
wires all over the room. The I heard about a Wireless
speaker package by Amphony. But it's too expensive for me
to justify, as I am very happy with the improvement in
There is an option, that means the Onkyo turns on, when the
TV is turned on, but I couldn't get this to work.
I then bought a Harmony 300, which has solved this minor
