  pretty good hd box

| | See all daverocks75's reviews (1)

I read a lot of reviews about this hd box before purchase so I knew what I'd be getting, build quality is good ,the remote is not so good ,it works but that's all.
hooked up to my 40 inch led tv i was a little dissappointed with the sd image a bit of a fiddle & it became apparent for my setup that the box needed to set to auto on the resolution & let the tv scale the image - much better for Me.
the HD picture is really nice n crisp,Billy Conolly route 66 looked very impressive last night, whislt recording from BBC1 HD at the same time via the beta software upgrade, the only niggle with this is it seems to dissable the volume control within the icecrypy box but no real issue.
I use a logitech harmony remote for all my kit & their website allowed very simple programming of the remote for this device making it a much more responsive experience a vast improvement, but for the money this is a gem of a box that records well + has good media function too,I only loose a star for the remote but the box itself is great so get one while it is still this price.

  would not buy

I got this for the world cup not knowing I wouldn't get hd till this year. The picture on standard tv was fine however so I was ok with it . Then the picture and sound started disappearing for a few seconds ,or the unit would freeze needing a restart , at random .I contacted Icecrypt who told me to download an update that should fix this .I'm not v.good on computers but I managed ok. The picture doesn't go now but the sound still does and it still freezes.I haven't checked lately,I've given up ,to see if there's new software but they hardly seem to do any updates. My advice would be : buy the Humax

  Unbelievable price!!

You cannot miss this bargain. I purchased this a few days ago, and its excellent. Simple and easy to use and set up. The epg is good, you can set the transparency of it so you can still see what's happening on your favourite programmes whilst looking what's on later. The HD picture is amazing. It can even record using a usb or hard drive, so your basically getting a Freeview HD recorder for 60 quid!! Its also comes with a HD cable as well.

  A bargain - and a few tips

To help with some of the points raised.

The picture quality is great from BBC1 HD, ITV HD, C4 HD, and BBC HD. If you connect your Amp via optical the T2200 will transcode into Dolby Digital 5.1.
MKV films look great in 1080p and can be in DD 5.1 too.

If you're recording one HD programme you can watch another, or play back a recording from USB, or pause and rewind the programme being recorded.

If you get lock-ups on channel change simply disable "interactive services" from the menu - never happens again.

You can programme nightly wake-up reminders to keep the clock on-time.

You may or may not actually need to seek out and install the recording firmware first with a new box - try yours out first.

So, there are solutions to the problems mentioned, all-in-all great value for money.

  Not impressed

I don't expect this unit to have durability. It has already proven to be problematic with the simplest of task. e.g. channel surfing. If you change the channel too quick, too slow or too many times using the -P/+P, the box freezes on the existing channel and every function on the remote becomes disabled. Then you have to power off the unit and reboot the box frequently. Also, the HD channel quality is not better than the HD free channels, in fact the sound quality is lacking.

Furthermore, you have to buy additional equipment to use the slot in front. It's not all bad, but this will be my first and last purchase of an ICECRYPT box. I would not recommend it.

  Just what the doctor ordered.

Crikey, I remember this when it was 170.00 , I was tempted then, but needed little temptation at this price, HDMI lead thrown in,and free delivery.
I was tempted to get the Humax T2, my brother has one, and I was impressed when I saw it, though he did mention it has its moments where's it 'locks up'. I spent ages on the web, trying to find an alternative to the Humax, I think having no 'card reader' contributed heavily to me losing total interest in the Humax.
This Icecrypt is everything I expected, its a doddle to set up, I had to flash the firmware, which only took a couple of minutes, extremely straightforward. Its quite small, maybe about as big as an hardback book, quite heavy though. The menus are classy, they look like summat you'd expect on a very expensive telly, very plush, smooth, easy to navigate, even my good lady was impressed. Theres a few minor concerns, for me, the usb socket on the front probably isnt a great idea, then again, if it was on the back it'd be a pain too, perhaps on the 'side' would have been the best compromise. A lack of a pair of RCA Phonos is also a bit of a ball ache, then again, theres ways and means around that. The remote doesn't particulary inspire me, something like this that is totally dependant on remot operation should really have something far more substantial, then again, I could be wrong, perhaps it just appears a bit 'fragile', theres certainly no signs of wear or anything, it just feels a bit,,'airfix', but to be fair I'm comparing it to a Denon remote that retails for about 150 smackers,
Lovely slick operation between channel changing, useful buttons on remote, favourites, info, etc.
If you feel the need to go HD, from your old freeview box, then I can assure you, this won't disapoint, its the type of product you 'fit', 'turn it on', and forget its there. I'm gonna try and get a spare remote though, just for my ow re-assurance. Oh, one other thing, if you record owt to an external hard drive via usb you can only watch it via the Icecrypt, you can't transfer the file to a pc, and, e.g. remove adverts , the files appear to be encrypted, though am reliably informed by those who know far more than me that this is universal with all HD Freeview Boxes. It may appear not to be a problem to many, but for example, if you happen to watch your holiday video, or a wedding, you can only watch it via the Icecrypt, saying that, theres always ways around these things, it really depends on just how much time and effort you want to commit to it. Don't hesitate, I can't see these staying at 60 forever.
Play.com service, was okay, nowt to get excited about, ordered on the sunday, arrived wednesday morning.

  Excellent value for money

I bought this unit and arrived within 2 days was very impressed.
I learned from google that this box can be turned in to PVR with beta software, which downloaded, put on a memory stick, and did update! Brilliant can now record HD programmes on a external HD.
The quality of the HD is fantastic, best ive seen,
The menu's are modern and slick, no lag with the the record (one click and done!) You can only record what you are watching, but it has antenna in and out, so record on this, and watch the freeveiw on the telly if needs be! Brilliant!
Only reason doesnt get 5 star is it does tend to lock up after a period of time once left on, and the remote isnt the best.
But by far the cheapest and best box for the money, and does top up TV! this does everything!
Highly highly recommend

Just wondering if it can be plugged into an existing Freeview box? I've already got a harddrive recorder with built in freeview with twin tuners which I want to continue using if possible. Any of you reviewers got any answers please?

Good but could be a lot better

I bought this HD freeview box from Play last October. I have to say the picture and sound quality are brilliant, HD channels look amazing and most SD channels are crisp (although no upscaling.)

However I do have a few grumbles. If you leave it on overnight (I know I should leave it on standby but it takes 20 -30 seconds to boot up) it tends to crash and leave you with a green screen. The remote is rather fiddly with very small buttons and looks cheap. My mine gripe though is that Icecrypt do not seem to be supporting it with firmware updates. Eight months on and I am still waiting for the update that will give it recording functionality.

  Excellent product

Came with the latest firmware that allows recording to USB. Make sure your USB is formatted to ntfs though. Comes with a hdmi cable too so no need to buy an extra one. Works brilliantly, well pleased.
