What do you want for under 25 quid?

| | See all nobby64's reviews (1)

I bought this product in the new year. I use rechargable 2600mah batteries and they last for about 18 hrs. The sound quality is good for the money. I have read the other reviews and the bad reviews are nothing like my experience of this product. What do you want for under 25 quid anyway? If your expectations are of home stereo or ipod qulity then you may be slightly disappointed. Go buy an ipod for 3 times as much money.

  For the occasional user

I would agree with the comments made by keepcalmandcarry on this is a radio most basic level. The sound quality is poor, the buttons are clunky and unresponsive at times. They is not a lock button on the unit either which makes it awkard when in your pocket. However if your only an occasional listener of the radio on the move this is an adquete product

  Cheap but it shows.

This unit was cheap, I have to say that outright, so I know I shouldn't expect much. However...
This unit is very plasticy. The silver finish looks tacky rather than smart and I think it'd look better in just all black. I susspect that over use it will ware off (as most finishes like this do).
DAB station are picked up initially but drop in and out as I move around my house. I have a Pure Tempus DAB in the bedroom which receives 100% signal level most of the time (and even some stations from the neighbouring transmitter) and a Panasonic mini system in the kitchen which also has a good signal level even with a thin wire aerial. I also own a JVC in-car DAB which is rock solid most of the time even when driving around my home town, so it looks like the reception on this Goodmans unit isn't great. I can imagine that if I used it on the train or bus the stations would be dropping out all over the place (watch this space).
The FM reception is a bit better but still hissy at times.
The display is small but clear and can be dimmed if required which is a nice touch.
The sound quality is the worse thing about this unit. It is lacking in bass and sounds muddy. There is little clarity and is a very unsatisfying experience.
The EQ (sound tweak) settings only work on DAB not FM but dont work well. Some of them actually distort the already poor sound quality.
I am a sound engineer and used a pair of Etymotic in-ear headphones to test this unit so I have not tried the ones supplied, but I'm sure they will not improve the sound and just might make it worse I suspect.
NB: The cable length of my Etymotics is good, with a long split so will not have effected the DAB signal reception. I say this because the headphone cable is used at the units aerial).
Overall the promise of DAB giving you a clean, clear, interference free radio experience just doesn't happen with this unit.
The only reason this is a 2 star review and not a 1 star is the price.

This arrived yesterday and worked for about an hour, now it is not working at all. During the brief time it worked I was able to ascertain that is has a very good fm radio, but since it is meant to be mainly a dab, that is by the way. As regards the dab, reception was poor, volume quiet and battery life horrendous. That was when it actually worked. This morning I can't turn it on or off, all I get is the Welcome screen flashing. Since there is no way to turn it on or off until it has loaded, I guess it will keep on flashing until the batteries run down. A quick google revealed that this problem is not unique to me ... aha, I think, could explain the cheap price. All in all a very badly designed bit of kit that looks and feels like a piece of cheap junk rather than something that bears the name of a once respected radio company.

I have bought 2 of these, one for myself and one for a Xmas present.
The build quality is fine, it looks nice and nothing looks like it will drop off.
On first scan it found 48 channels with the original headphones plugged in, these headphones are laughably bad! the sound quality is worse even than pound shop items but try a better quality pair and it makes all the difference, its never going to rival an iPod but its good enough and it will go really loud if required.
All in all a bargain for a Dab radio.

I was considering much more expensive DAB personal radios to listen to sport on after my 18 year old Aiwa FM/AM personal radio finally gave up the ghost. I have bought 3 more expensive personal DABs (though admittedly not top brand) and the reception on all was pretty dreadful. I was in the market for a replacement AM/FM radio when I saw this advertised for such a ridiculously low price I thought it had to be a typo so I took a chance and ordered one.

Build quality is on the cheap side and buttons a bit flimsy but acceptable for the money. It looks as stylish as many more expensive products.

I was pleasantly surprised - the reception was excellent - much better than my other personal DABs. Be careful when doing the initial scan that you are situated in a known good spot so that all the normal stations will tune into the memory.

The sound quality is not the best - the supplied earpieces don't help. Replace them and use decent earphones and it makes an improvement from poor to ok. The EQ does not alter sound greatly but the sound is OK bearing in mind the cost. I bought mine mainly for listening to Talkradio / Radio 5 Live and sports broadcasts and it is excellent at that job.

Overall, I can have no complaints - DAB at this price seemed unrealistic till I got this little thing.

Well done Play.com!!

  Very good for price

Bought this for my Dad for christmas to replace his standard personal radio. The reception is good and the sound is clear for him. The battery life isn't fantastic as others said (his lasted about 6 hours I think), but he's bought rechargeable batteries so its no issue really, and he just carries spare ones with him. Obviously if you're looking for one with amazing sound and features then you'll have to pay a lot more, but for 18 quid I think this is very good value for what you get.

Seems really cheaply made.
It doesn't turn off properly so when you come to use the radio again
the battery's are dead. Not that impressed really.

  Poor Build Sound and Reception

You get what you pay for.
Don't expect a good pair of headphones to improve the sound quality; it really doesn't.
The reception is incredibly poor.
Even when you get a signal the sound reproduction is diabolical.
Cheaply made. Feels poor qualuty. A very poor product.
Runs off two AA batteries. Even fresh Lithium ones show up as partly empty.
Only thing in its favour is size, and it's hardly small. It's fat and awkward to fit in your pocket.
So bad I can only assume it's faulty / not fit for purpose. Returned.
