  Good but not 5 stars...

Everything was fine with this product - set-up, use of DVD and HDD to record, freeview - with two exceptions.

First, the EPG was not easy to activate - there was a setting that I had to change before it would display but this was buried away and not indicated clearly in the instructions. Far too fiddly for my liking and took hours of messing around to find the option to activate it on my type of set-up.

Second, the DVD player part broke within a couple of months of use. Everything else still worked fine but I had to then go back and buy a separate DVD player.

Still, for the price, and the unlikeliness that someone else would have the DVD player break on them, I give this 4/5.

  Absolute Quality....Just Buy It!!!!

Everything you need to know.First and foremost, the recordings are stunningly good, even in the longer recording modes. The playback is crystal clear both visually and sonically.
DVD playback is exceptional. The quality of the upscaling in 1080p was quite a shock to me,as i've bought upscaling DVD players before that haven't quite lived upto the billing.I was a tad worried that the units sound quality,as with most recorders, wouldn't be as good as a decent stand alone players',no worries there though, this really delivers,so much so that my 5 star rated Denon 1740 is now confined to the bedroom!
I don't think the manual is as bad as some make out, there is a quick set-up guide in it and a quick set-up contained in the on-screen menu.Of course, you could spend ages setting it up to your own liking but then,if you like your gadgets as i do,that's half the fun, isn't it?

  Great quality dvd recorder!

I have to agree with the other reviews that this dvd recorder is great quality. Firstly, it looks the part - it's substantial without being clumsy looking and definitely well-built. The recorder is alot quieter than the one it replaced, and the recording quality is great even on standard. The machine upscales movies well and the picture quality is great, even divx movies look good. The one and only drawback is the freeview tv guide, which I find to be pretty slow - I guess you can't have everything! Buy this it won't disappoint!

  excellent buy.

i brought this as part of a package with a bravia tv and have to say this is brilliant machine. The picture quality using hdmi is outstanding compared to my previous panasonic recorder.

Set up is easy, although the instruction guide is poorly written and confusing..just follow the on screen prompts and the unit will be up and running very quickly.

The hard drive has some nice features and is easy to back up photos and mp3s using the jukebox/photo album feature.

Recording is straight forward by just pressing the timer button on the programme guide and series link is useful for your favourite programs.

This may be slightly more expensive than comparable hdd recorders but the extra spent will be well worth it.

I really dont know why some people are having a moan about this machine,it's really nice and the picture quality is amazing both on playback and recordings.
Although it has a seperate analogue and digital tuner, you can only record one program at a time, but I dont have a problem with that.
The unit is extremely well made and also looks good too.
It has a built in fan at the rear of the machine, which is quiet enough, and this helps to keep the unit cool when it's running, and only comes on when the unit is being used.(Standby it turns off)
I agree that the instructions could have been written a bit better, but with a bit of patience it's perfectly understandable and getting the most out of your machine will soon be easy enough.
There are no problems with the software, and mine came with the latest 1.65 firmware, and even if yours dont have this firmware,it can be downloaded from the sony website, and put on a disk to update it.
This is truly one amazing machine, and I highly recommend it.............
So go on,get yourself one of these and be a part of the digital age.

A great Dvd Recorder from Sony

| | See all eddierog's reviews (2)

First impressions of the 870 were very good. Pictures from the digital tuner were crisp and vibrant, and bear in mind that i have it hooked up to a 32" CRT T.V for now, so its going to look so much better on a Lcd or Plasma screen. Again, this is another reason to use the digital tuner as images appear so much more life like. You will however need to make sure that you can receive freeview and that a rooftop aerial is fitted with a good quality coax cable being recommended to receive the best signal possible.

When it comes to recordings the Sony is first class. With HQ level recordings the highest quality the picture is utterly pristine and even the lower quality settings are acceptable, although I would not advise setting the recording level lower than LSP. I have my level set at SP from which you will get 68 hours of very good quality recording time.

Dvd playback is where this recorder really shines, with full upscaling all the way to the heights of 1080p. Again, once this is connected through the HDMI output to a Hi-Def screen this is going to look stunning. Black levels are excellent and contrast levels look very natural. It can also handle Divx playback.

A comprehensive array of sockets including DV and USB inputs are present at the front of the recorder behind a drop down panel.
If you're wondering what you could do with a USB input, there's a pleasant surprise. It lets you instantly rip music from a USB device onto the hard-disk using the music jukebox feature. The sound quality from the USB drive was as good as playback from an actual disc.

You can also transfer images to the hard drive from a digital camera from the USB input. As an added bonus you can then print images on your hard drive by connecting a compatible pictbridge printer to the USB input on the recorder.

Overall this is a feature packed Dvd Recorder that does everything you would need a Dvd recorder to do, and at a very competitive price. For these reasons i would give this a highly recommended rating.

  Excellent product

When I purchased a Sony TV this came as a free offer.

Its great, the DVD player is very good, quality is excellent, I can't say I can notice a massive improvement via the HDMI (HD cable) upscaling, but its still a lot better than my old Sony DVD.

What make's this special is the Freeview tuner and built in Hard drive, I have had a couple of the Thomson Freeview boxes with hard drives which were good, but the Sony is so much better, the picture used to always drop out with the Thomson, It's a rare thing with the Sony, which means It has a better tuner.

It's also got a large storage capacity, where as I was always deleting on the Thomson to make more space.
Very easy to use, all you do is select the menu, (which is like the teletext menu), select the program you want to record, press the red button and that's it, It will start recording when the program starts, how I ever managed with a video recorder?

It's not the cheapest DVD player, but would give it a consideration, If I need to buy another I would not hesitate.

  Brilliant !!!

| | See all magnersnice's reviews (3)

I use it with a TV with built in freeview. It means I can record one digital channel on the hard drive / dvd and watch another on the tv at the same time. Timer recordings can be made same way without the need to set the channel timer on the tv as i had to before. Absolutely brilliant !!! Build quality is to sony high standards and the remote operates the hard drive as well as tv and accesses text........set up took 5 mins........

This was a replacement for my samsung HDR730 and I tell you the samsung belongs on the scrap heap
This dvd recorder does wonderful things and the recording quality is truly brilliant even on the lower quality settings, not sure about the recordings but am sure they will fit to the disc so even if they are on high quality it should down scale the quality automatically.
only down sight is the front display which is a little dull but dont take that away from what this amazing product does
Highly recommended to all out there you will not be disappointed at all

  GREAT PRICE! for a sony???

| | See all BEWARNED's reviews (7)

I have bought this recently and I have to say the upscaling on this is superb even at 1080i. Looks great sitting next to my ps3. However to get the full potential you will need a tv that has 1080p! great dvd recorder.
