having used various satnavs for cars, i decided tomtom had the best support and map updating capabilities.
i was a little disappointed then when the map that comes with it was unable to update using the mapshare facility in tomtom home. it wasn't even listed as a map available from tomtom itself! the map is UK & IRE, but the only one close is GB & IRE.
it was old and well out of date as far as roads in my area are concerned, so i rang tomtom (0845 number on their website) and withing 15 minutes (they had to make sure my tomtom version was up to date etc first) they had credited me a download of the latest and greatest GB & IRE map.
the tomtom home interface is easy. just plug in the tomtom to your computer and the home program starts instantly, it then finds all the mapshare updates (approx 14,000 as i write this) since last plugged in, any software updates, and route or voice or addon updates and installs them in a few seconds.
the bluetooth headset is fantastic, clear and precise, even above 140mph (which i of course tried on a track), phone conversations are actually good, though the ideal speed is 70mph and below for this. battery life of the headset seems neverending. the same goes for the tomtom itself - 5 hours is the most i have had out of it so far.
the RAM mount is top notch, worth at last £50 if you were to buy it separately. i have a 2003 R1, and i mounted it on the brake fluid reservoir mount. like i said, stable at well in excess of 150mph, though it does wobble a little disconcertingly on bumpy roads!
in conclusion, great satnav, great accessories. but make sure the first thing you do is get on to tomtom to give you the current maps.
