Does anyone know if its just normally dvds you use for recording on these or in fact most dvd recorders! I have been told there are different types of dvds to record to some only suit certain recorders??? Can Anyone clarify this? Please......

This recorder is "disc only" - what would you epect for such money? A large hard disc drive adds on megabucks!

I've been hesitating to buy a DVD recorder because of other people's experiences, but find this machine easy to operate. No problems at all, even for a beginner!

Tis great - as far as hooking up to sky box goes - I followed the diagram and changed settings to RGB out on sky box (note I have HD box but doubt that makes any difference). It didnt work til I checked the troubleshooting section of Sony's manual - you have to press the input button to change the input source to L1 - worked a treat then! And agree - I set the recording mode to record 4 hours of a standard def tv recording I wanted to keep and its still good quality! Great value.

Like previous reviews, a gem of a recorder.
V.good quality recordings. There are nearly 8 different recording modes! I tried the lowest with nearly 10 hours on a dvd allowable, you don't want to use that but for for non important recs its viewable. The upper level rec settings are better suited though. The HDMI upsacling is really good, and dont know if this can be right or not but my picture from the sky box to the tv via the dvd recorder scarts seems to be much sharper and well defined?! sky (via scart) to DVD rec to tv (via hdmi)
RGB in/out! great.

A non related gripe, which I hope PLAY.com would implement is about delivery. I know every item has its own delivery charge, and they say it is sent out individually but they should have the option to chose to have all items delivered at one time.
I ordered 5 items all which arrived independantly. Each in oversized containers (I wonder if air is charged carriage).
If you need certain items to arrive before others, or groups of items, for immediate need so be it, but an option to add the items together would be great. Saves packaging and makes logistical sense.
Overal as usual great service.

I Looked for weeks for a good dvd recorder without a hard drive, (i have sky+), This is amazing for the price, it does have a fan in the back but it is quiet, this Recorder as well as playing all - , +, and -rw , +rw discs will record on all of them too,
This dvd recorder will also (if you ask it to) reformat -R & -Rw Discs to( Vr mode) before use ,Which the manual advises to do to keep recordings in their Original Format Ratio..
The upscaling via a good hdmi cable from this player especially at 1080p onto a FULL HD Screen produces amazing results ESPECIALLY with new DVD titles...
This recorder also has a RGB SCART INPUT!! (Line 1) (a lot dont),..
This allows gorgeous High Quality recordings from a RGB Scart output.. (i.e The TV Scart Socket on the rear of sky+ box )..
There are many recording time options as well from 1 hour a disc -Through to many hours Per Disc..
(Finest Quality to Poorest)..
This player/recorder is a Gem..
Hope i've helped persuade you
Note.... Discs recorded in Vr Mode will of course play only in other dvd players/ recorders that Support Vr mode.
All recordings for me on all discs so far have been PERFECT.. :-)

I picked this up since this was one of Play.com's weekly offers. It's great - not just for recording television but for recording from other devices too.

I was impressed that it could record my video games footage flawlessly from the composite connectors at the front. Worked great when recording footage from PlayStation 2.

When I used it with the Xbox 360, I thought it only worked in 50hz but tweaking a few options in the DVD recorder's options soon let me begin recording 60hz (some video games only work in this moving image format).

I recommend it if you want an affordable and reliable recording device for your television programmes, camcorder, video games console and more.

The playback works great too for DVDs (you can also watch DivX encoded videos). There's a HDMI port that you can use to upscale your DVDs and also component output ports are there too. Should work well with standard televisions but also with high-definition television sets, thanks to the extra ports.

  FANTASTIC PRICE - FANTASTIC MACHINE

I purchased this back in January 2008 and have been raving on about it to all my mates ever since.

A quality machine from a premium brand - what more could you ask for - If you want a DVD Recorder without the hard drive go for this one.

The upscaling capabilities are amazing - I have a 1080p tv and this goes fantastic with it.

You can tell the difference straight away when watching a DVD with a HDMI cable upscaled compared to using just a scart cable.

Have HD ready tv and Sky+? Get this!

The HDMI Upscaling is brilliant! (although i am using a sony tv and monster HDMI so it would look good with that set up) i use this a dvd player with my HD tv and just use the record function to write my recordings onto a dvd, this is better for people who have sky+ not freeview

Great bargain from a top class make

In my opinion there are not many dvd recorders out there. Perhaps this is due to the popularity of Sky + or other such like Harddrive digital recorders.
This is a great machine if you just want to simply record your programmes on DVD and you dont want to pay extra for integrated freeview or a Hard drive as your exsisting set-up may allready have these features.
Havnt had any problems yet - whereas my old Liteon dvd recorder had problems all over the place. Anyway becky if you wanted a top class dvd recorder for a fair price then grab this one before it sells out!
