This Sony DAB radio is in the very overcrowded market of small portable Digital radios. I have found a lot of them, particularly the 'Pure' brand often look very dubious, and it has been a breath of fresh air to see one with a really nice design, and it really is great, particularly for the price.
Firstly then, as I've lead into it, I'll cover the design. It is very modern, but with that retro touch of two simple nobs, and a row of relatively disguised buttons. The operation is very simple. If you are using it in DAB mode then you scroll the left wheel through the list of stations, and then press enter on the one you want. Tuning to a station takes a second or two.
The aerial is as many of these portable ones, quite intrusive, and you cannot really use it with the aerial down, but you can leave it quite retracted if that bothers you. Other things to note are the speaker grill, solid metal, very attractive, and that there is a very nice handle to use on the back that you cannot see from any angle, other than back, (i.e. easy to pick up, without having an ugly handle).
The sound quality is excellent through the built in speaker, but as I often use it at my desk, it's nice to plug my 2.1 speakers into the built in 3.5mm jack, which provides a little more bass etc, which is great.
The screen scrolls through what's playing etc on default, you can scroll through views of 'Genre' 'Operator, (e.g. BBC National DAB)', 'Time and Date', 'Tuning, e.g. 225.64MHz', 'Bit Rate + Stereo/mono' and Signal Strength as a %. These are often useful to look through, (I like having Time and Date). With the things I have listed, it *always* shows the Radio station on the top row, it's the bottom row you can change.
Other nice things are that you can unplug it whenever without losing tuning or time and date, (as it does all this when turning on), so you don't have to waste energy by leaving it plugged in.
There's not much else to say, other than the price is really great, design beautiful etc etc. Really enjoy this if you get it, as I highly recommend it for this sector of the DAB market, really wonderful.
Enjoy, Charlie -
