Having just got my own flat and having become used to my parents Sky Plus box, I decided I needed the convience of Sky plus in my life without subscription. I bought one of these a few months back and it's been as good as Sky+ - simple to use and ideal for recording series, so I'm never worried about getting back on time, or being dicated to by the TV schedule. It's great for series linking all the great stuff, for example Ive got the whole of The Wire recorderd so I can watch them when I like. This is great but what really impressed me was the DVD playback - I have an HD ready TV and it's great to view via HDMI conection, I'm convinced the quality is better than that of my old philips dvd player. I record quite a lot of American series and 250gb seems plenty of space. A great product!
I bought this as a first step into the HDD/DVD recorder market, while most features were OK and picture quality was good etc. there was one major flaw: it is impossible to change the channel using the EPG without recording!!
I know this sounds stupid, but apparently it was not just a fault on our machine. Despite the fact that the instruction manual told us how to do it, it didn't work. So, I phoned Toshiba's technical support and they told me that this model just doesn't do that!
If you cannot use the EPG to choose a channel, that makes the 'pause live TV' function rather useless and it means you still need to keep a set top box for watching TV live (getting rid of this was one of the purposes of buying this product).
In the end I have had to send it back, as it is unfit for the purpose I bought it for at a loss of postage one way, I am now hoping that I can buy a machine of a different make that will not disappoint me quite so much.
