Panasonic: Ideas For Life:

The DMC-FX150 features the f/2.8 LEICA DC VARIO-ELMARIT lens. Advanced optical technology accurately delivers the light received by this 28mm wide-angle lens to the large 1/1.72-inch CCD with 14.7-megapixel resolution. The lens unit, which comprises seven elements in six groups, including an EA lens and four lenses with five aspherical surfaces, is designed and manufactured to LEICA's stringent standards. This advanced lens design ensures that the images sent to the CCD are high in resolution, low in distortion, and clear from corner to corner.

The iA (Intelligent Auto) mode includes MEGA O.I.S. to detect hand-shake, Intelligent ISO Control to detect subject movement, Face Detection to detect faces in the frame, Intelligent Scene Selector to detect scene conditions, Light Detection to detect the brightness level and - new to the DMC-FX150 - AF Tracking to continually track a moving subject and keep it in focus. These six functions work automatically and simultaneously in iA Mode to optimize your settings, making it easier than ever to take beautiful photos every time.

Product Features

Intelligent Auto Technology
New LUMIX cameras not only prevents blurry, out-of-focus photos with one-touch ease, they also automatically select the optimal shooting mode, all thanks to Intelligent Auto Technology. With LUMIX and Intelligent Auto Technology, it's easy for anyone to take great photos anytime, anywhere!

iA
Intelligent Auto Technology is bascially the collective name for four detection and optimising functions which work together seemlessly and add up to perfect shots every time:

MEGA O.I.S
MEGA O.I.S. uses built-in gyrosensors to detect even tiny camera movements and then shifts a lens in the opposite direction to compensate. The system is completely optical - it does not affect the CCD or image processing - so you get sharp, clear images without deterioration.

Intelligent ISO Control
The system automatically raises the ISO setting (that is, the light sensitivity of the CCD) accordingly, allowing the camera to shoot at a higher shutter speed thus preventing motion blur.

Face Detection
This new function detects faces anywhere in the frame and automatically chooses the optimal focus and exposure. It detects up to 15 faces in a photo, and automatically readjusts the settings if their positions change.

Intelligent Scene Selector
When the camera's in iA mode, the Intelligent Scene Selector senses the ambient conditions and automatically selects either Scenery, Portrait, Macro, Night Portrait or Night Scenery mode accordingly.

I bought this camera hoping it would improve my photos of the many concerts I attend. It's a great little camera, slim, light and nice looking. This is a lot of camera for not a great deal of money. I spent hours reading the manual and trying out the numerous different functions from portrait, landscape, sunset, hi-spec and many others. I tried this out on a rock gig about a week after I received it and while I did have a few blurred shots I think that was more down to me and my unsteady arms above my head. It captured colour really well and even without a flash the pictures are really clear. The Intelligent auto function is a great one if you just want to set it up and go. The facial recognition feature will follow the subject if it moves in the frame and re-adjust the focus back to the subject. The auto tracking function is another god send as it will re-focus the centre of the frame in much the same way as facial recognition if you're taking a wider angled shot. I did use the flash a couple of times but turned it off as the camera picked up the stage and lights much more clarity without it. The battery life was really good as well, 200 + pics taken and only 1/3 of the battery gone. I can guarantee this camera will get so much use thanks to it's ability to take great pics under some very restricted lighting conditions. Bring on my next concert to try it out with a little more confidence -after I've re-read the manual again no doubt to check out a few more of the hundreds of ways to take a picture.

 Okay for the price

I bought this compact because of it's ability to shoot in Raw mode as well as the vast array of features that are found on this camera, after taking the camera out for the day i have found that my biggest fear has been realised, the noise generated in the images, and i mean on settings of less than ISO 400, now I know that compacts do generate more noise than DSLR but i was taken aback by the amount of noise on twilight photos and sadly taking photos in Raw doesn't seem to help any at all, in fact i would say that Raw exposure in this camera is a waste of time, a shame because the bundle Raw software that came with the camera is good and feature packed, a real shame.
Quality on manual mode is limited to P or M, but don't get too excited, the aperture only goes from F2.8 to F9.0, but the exposure is good on F2.8, a worthwile addition to any lens, along with the wide 28mm. Quality is good, battery life is good, i like the menu system which is easy and clear. As i said i thought the leica lens would be good and it is, but the damn noise in low light is spoiling what could have been an excellent camera, in fact the best thing you can do is set the camera to iAUTO and let the camera do the work, as it seams to take a better photo if left to it's own thing. HD recording is good, but i never use the option.
For £150.00 it's a good buy, but if Panasonic sorted the noise problem out then it would be even better.
