 The definitive DS RPG

There's something about Dragon Quest IX which just makes you fall in love with it. This is a game which everyone can love, from the most hardcore JRPG mega-enthusiast to someone who only plays for half an hour per day.

Beginning with graphics, DQIX's are beautiful. This is easily the best looking game on the DS. There is a sort of psuedo-cel-shaded look which works really well. Akira Toriyama's (of Dragon Ball fame) designs are stunning as always, and are incredibly detailed. Monster designs are just as good, and there are a lot of them, including classic Dragon Quest creatures like Slimes.

Gameplay is that of a traditional RPG, and is menu and turn-based. battles are not random encounters, and you can see enemies on the field map to run in to. A certain amount of grinding is required, but battles are fun anyway so you won't be bothered too much by it. The battle system is very traditional, but is also very charming, There is a lot of room for development and strategy as you level up.

The story is brilliant. It's not as deep or heavy as Final Fantasy, but is still emotional and very enjoyable.

Level-5 and Square Enix have proved their mastery of the RPG with this game. It is a game which no DS owner should be without.

Short review for those unsure of purchase.

Like many reading this, I merely observed the series from the sidelines, as I never really enjoyed the random encounter as you walk aspect and also (what seemed to be) a complex battle system. However, I took the plunge and found that the game is by no means easy, but the early hours help you through it and get you to grips with the mechanics. Level grinding is required ofcourse for certain Boss Creatures but this never really felt like a chore, as the battles go so fast and your team can be managed so they attack and use items without you having to select their moves each turn. On the subject of the teams, you can create 3 other characters to follow you and battle. This feature is mainly for those who will not be using the Multi-player feature (like me) and allows you to have many different classes within your team.
Random encounter battles are now gone, and replaced with overworld enemies where you can see what you will face. For me this made the game more welcoming,as you can avoid enemies (at your own expense!) and search the areas for loot and such.
The graphics and sound direction are topnotch, as in most other Dragon Quests. Currently, I'm about 5 hours or so in the game and having a lot of fun. Your character (and followers) can all be fully customised to add and improve attributes and the list of clothing and weapons is very extensive, even 5 hours in.

Yeah, so in short I would really reccomend that you give this a shot, but make sure to take your time with it, dont rush and enjoy the story and the huge expansive world.

 Great Game - Bad Advertising

Seeing all these ads on the TV would make the uninitiated think that this game was all about dressing up your character, and seems to be marketed for teenage girls who enjoy fashion games. No mention is made of the plot, or the actual gameplay. This initially put me off buying this title.
However, I have always been fond of RPG titles so I decided to take a chance on it, and I'm glad I did.
The story starts out slow and perhaps a little dull, but after a couple of hours once you gain a little bit of freedom to explore, the game really changes pace and you start to see the depth. Graphics are great for the DS, probably the best I've seen, and rarely do I notice anything that looks odd or poorly animated which is common in handheld systems.
Gameplay isn't revolutionary, but it is high quality and JRPG fans will feel instantly comfortable. Sound is pretty decent too, with some catchy tunes that haven't grown old yet.
On the whole, a very good game. A must for RPG fans.

Average, Perks up abit later on in game.

I felt the custimoizing of characters was kind of a con, it's basically just the armour you're wearing appears on the character, nothing special.

the gameplay is pretty average, there is alot of time spent wandering around trying to figure out what you're supposed to do. But later on it does pick up abit but that's about it.

 awesome game !
