Redefining the Pokémon series, Pokémon: Black Version offer fans and newcomers alike a completely new adventure to discover and enjoy. And for the first time ever in the series, the two games feature their own individual areas to explore. Set in the Unova region, which is located far away from the Kanto and Johto regions Pokémon fans will be familiar with, both games also feature all new action-packed locations, such as the bustling urban environment of Castelia City

Pokémon: Black Version also mark the first time in the Pokémon series that the seasons will change in the game world. The result sees specific Pokémon appearing more frequently during particular seasons and also changing in colour or form. Furthermore, players can only access some areas during a specific season.

As if that wasn't enough, players will also encounter more than 150 never-seen-before Pokémon, some of which can only be caught in each version of the game. At the start of the game, players can choose between new, older boy and girl Trainers, as well as from three new starter Pokémon - a Grass-type Pokémon, Snivy, a Fire-type Pokémon, Tepig or, a Water-type Pokémon, Oshawott - before departing on their adventure with two childhood friends.

In Pokémon: Black Version the player is tasked with completing two quests. One is to complete the Unova Pokédex by finding and catching every Pokémon in the region - however, in order to fully complete the Unova Pokédex, players will need to trade Pokémon between both versions. The other is to become the Pokémon League Champion by battling with wild Pokémon and other Trainers in the region. Players will train their Pokémon with the ultimate goal of taking on the Elite Four and the Unova Champion! Thanks to some all new connectivity features you will be able to hone your fighting skills via the Random Matchup mode, using the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.

Pokemon: Black Version gives you the chance to see the Legendary Pokémon Reshiram! Reshiram can engulf its surroundings in flames.

Reshiram:
Category - Vast White Pokémon
Type - Dragon-Fire
Ability - Turboblaze
Height - 10' 06" / 319.8 cm
Weight - 727.5 lbs. / 329.99 kg

  • Capture and train 156 new 5th Generation Pokémon, with new moves and abilities
  • Explore the new region of Alleos, and try to save it from the nefarious plans of Team Plasma. The Alleos region also contains two version-exclusive areas depending on which version of Pokémon the player owns:
  • White Forest: A forest containing wild Pokémon and Trainers to battle. The player can find certain Pokémon from previous generations of Pokémon in the grass patches. The player can also take part in a competition in which, once per day, they must capture a specific Pokémon
  • Black City: A city full of tall, black buildings, where the player can battle other Pokémon trainers and acquire rare items. The player can challenge the trainers they find here to Pokémon Battles once per day. Their victories are tallied up and the player is rewarded with money that they can spend on rare items that are difficult to find in-game
  • Pokemon: Black Version introduces the Seasons mechanic, where the in-game environment changes depending on what month it is in real life. Seasons change monthly, rotating through Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter according to the internal clock / calendar of the DS system
  • 3D graphics give the series a fresh new look
  • Introduction of triple battle. In a Triple Battle, Trainers send out three Pokémon at once in a 3-vs-3 battle. When taking part in Triple Battles, players must also take into account the positioning of their Pokémon, as this also affects the potential tactics within the battle
  • Video chat with friends over Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection using the Nintendo DSi inner camera

On par, if not better than HeartGold and SoulSilver

I played Pokemon Black when it came out in Japan in September of last year and I've got to say I loved it. I was worried that it wouldn't live up to expectations and be as good as HG/SS, but frankly it did not disappoint. The new generation is fresh and is a completely new start for gamers; containing a world far away from the older generations. It was greatly needed as it helps new gamers immerse themselves in the world of Pokemon, but retains its charm and keeps its sense of identity for the older player to enjoy. My only real worry is that the gyms in this generation are much more linear than they have been for the past four; however this does greatly help the younger audience find their way (in previous games I have found that younger players tend to get frustrated when they have to train and backtrack to older cities to face gym leaders).
It's not just the story that has changed: 3D has been improved from the last generation and a more dynamic camera has been included which, in my opinion, give a better sense of a new world to the players. New battle techniques such as triple battles and rotation battles are great addition and add a new stragegic element to the games. All of these additions make these games the most promising yet, and hopefully they will not disappoint.

Ah i bought this game from japan before xmas to play over xmas new year ....

I completed it in 2 days perhaps its because i beat every region and game. This game i found dragging and tedious

You pretty much have 2 unrelenting rivals who pick the other 2 starters and from then on they and team plasma continuesly attack you from A to Z beat gym grab badge fight rival fight plasma Wash Rince Repeat.

I bilieve after Gold and Silver the poke creators let there eyes rest on this one the new poke roster is nothing impressive nor rememberable how ever the graphics are much improved other than that its a straight foward walk through poke park.

Largely due to the fact that it was pretty much perfect in the first place the Pokemon series has changed very little in the last fifteen years. Despite this the developers have listened to some of the criticisms levelled at the games and included a number of the improvements fans have long been asking for.

The game of course still sees the player taking on the role of a child travelling from town to town collecting Pokemon and using them to battle all manner of opponents. Despite the familiar concept Pokemon Black is a more streamlined experience. Little things like combining the Pokemon Centre and Poke Mart into one building for example cuts down on pointless travelling whilst battles also run at a slightly quicker pace.

Two new types of battle are also included. Triple battles obviously allow for three Pokemon to fight at once whilst rotation battles allow the player to switch out Pokemon before each attack adding a new level of strategy to the game. Some Pokemon can now also combine moves to create more powerful attacks making the selection of a balanced team even more essential.

For the first time since the Game Boy original this version features a completely new set of Pokemon. Many of these are not as well designed as the original group but it does make exploration more interesting. No longer will you enter a cave to be greeted by yet another Zubat or Geodude. It is possible to get some of the older Pokemon once you complete the game or by using some of the bonus features but as per usual most have to be transferred from your save games on previous iterations.

Wrongly looked upon as 'a game for kids' Pokemon remains once the most in depth and strategic RPGs available on any console and with its more streamlined approach the Black or White game are as good a place to start as any.
