The latest title in Nintendo's innovative Touch! Generations range, 42 All-Time Classics does away with cumbersome boards and packs of cards. Instead it combines the Nintendo DS's innovative touch-screen control mechanism with 42 of the most popular games ever invented - ranging from card classics like Poker and Texas Hold 'Em, board games such as Chess and Backgammon to bar games like Darts and Snooker.

On top of the huge variety of single player content, this game features a multiplayer mode allowing you to play fun games with your family as well as competing with friends. Play with up to seven friends via the Nintendo DS local wireless network, or connect with the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service to challenge people from different towns or even different countries for the majority of the games within this title. All the games in 42 All-Time Classics feature a stats tracking function, allowing you to view your wins and losses as well as other statistics for each game.

42 All-Time Classics features a built-in "Picto chat" function, which allows players to communicate (send and receive messages) while playing. Now not only can you play Poker against friends, but you can psyche them out too by bluffing about your hand!
  • With familiar favorites like checkers, darts and poker, 42 All-Time Classics will appeal to everyone. Video game newcomers will appreciate the easy-to-use interface, while card game novices will appreciate each game's rules section.
  • Players can challenge up to seven friends with one game card via Multi-Card Play or DS Download Play. Can't play checkers without shouting "KING ME!" across the table? The in-game (PictoChat-like) feature takes table talk to a new level.
  • There's no need to lug around cards or boards when you want to play a quick game. 42 All-Time Classics is one-stop gaming that will appeal to everyone's tastes, whether they're in the mood for bowling, backgammon, bridge or billiards.
  • 42 All-Time Classics is part of Nintendo's Touch Generations library, which includes uniquely engaging titles that have appeal beyond core gamers.

42 reasons to get this game

| | See all Adam2712's reviews (7)

OK, so maybe I don't have 42 reasons to get this game like the title suggests, but this is a game that deserves your attention.

For starters, you get 42 games for under £20, if that's not a bargain then I don't know what is.
There are some real gems in this game that will bring back some nostalgia in your life with games such as Ludo, Dominos and even a Battleships-type game. For the more modern gamer there's a selection of Billiards, Bowling and Darts; and for the gambler inside of you there's Blackjack too. There are even some games that you've, probably, never even heard of.

Single player mode has three different options -Stamp mode, Mission mode and Free Play mode-.
In Stamp mode you have to win each of the 42 games against the computer; once you've won the first game you receive a stamp and then move on to the next game, and so on.
Mission mode is pretty obvious but very tricky. You have to complete a certain objective in a certain game, such as getting 5 strikes in-a-row in Bowling or getting a "Straight" in Rummy.
And Free Play mode lets you play any of the 42 games at your leisure.

Multi Player mode is great fun too. With Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, not only can you challenge people across the globe, but you and also communicate with them due to the games built in Picto Chat function. The Picto Chat function also work with the normal DS-to-DS Multi Player games too. You can even download a demo version to your friends Nintendo DS so that they can see how great this game is.

This game is fantastic and is very easy to just pick up and play. It's also a great way to introduce your friends or family into gaming, and for under £20 you really can't go wrong.

 Pure gaming heaven

This game is wonderful. Absolute value for money. It's designed very well, the interface is clean, player input is smooth, and the presentation is near perfect. This is what gaming used to be about. A solitary affair, where high scores matter above all else. There are three modes to choose from; Free Play, Stamp, and Mission. All self-explanitory really. The game's manual is wafer thin, but every game has on-screen tutorials, and there is an in-depth help section with the game, including index, and search options. So if you come across a game that you don't know the rules to, its pretty simple to learn.

There are 18 card games; 1. Old Maid 2. Spit 3. I doubt it 4. Sevens 5. Memory 6. Pig 7. Blackjack 8. Hearts 9. President 10. Rummy 11. Seven Bridge 12. Last Card 13. Last Card Plus 14. Five Card Drawer 15. Texas Hold'em 16. Nap 17. Spades 18. Contract Bridge.

There are 12 board games; 1. Chinese Checkers 2. Draughts 3. Dots and Boxes 4. Hasami Shogi 5. Turncoat 6. Connect Five 7. Grid Attack 8. Backgammon 9. Chess 10. Shogi 11. Field Tactics 12. Ludo.

There are 4 variety games; 1. Soda Shake 2. Dominoes 3. Koi-Koi 4. Hangman. There are 5 action games; 1. Bowling 2. Darts 3. Billiards 4. Balance 5. Takeover

There are 3 single player (no cpu opponent) games; 1. Solitaire 2. Escape 3. Mahjong

With all that content, its hard to see how anyone could go wrong with this purchase. Highly recommended.

If you looking for a game with that will last you a long time and gives you value for money, then look no further. Initially when I started playing this i was a bit disappointed as it wasn't as good as I thought it was going to be. However I shouldn't have been so quick to judge as this games offers lots to get your teeth stuck into.

Firstly games which you think wouldn't work very well such as Ludo are actually cleverly put together and work great playing against he computer, with other players or a mixture of both. The game is worth buying alone for mahjong solitaire which will have you playing for weeks and the bowling and darts are brilliant when played against another person (it does get really competitive).

Probably the best feature of the game is the stamp collecting which means you have to play all the games in order to collect stamps and move onto the next level of games and unlock more games. This really works as games you wouldn't ordinarily play, you will have to in order to gain the stamp and you might even realise you like playing them (I did with several games).

If I'm being truthful there are some games which should have been done a little better, the billiards for example is a bit to random and you can't really get very much control but it is still fun to play against someone.

Another brilliant feature is the option to give someone a gift. What this means is if someone you know wants to play one of the games but doesn't have the cartridge, you can send them a copy of that game for them to play. You can then play the same game or something completely different and it won't matter. You can even switch your DS off and the other person can still play. When they finally switch there DS off the link is cancelled and you can download that or another game the next time. This really is one of the best features of any of the DS games and if you have a group of friends everyone can benefit.

All in all a game this is a game that not only is good to play by yourself, but if you have other that want to play there is even more fun to be had.

The premise is simple, 42 of the most recognisable games on one cart. What you effectively get is a single player campaign that teaches you the ropes on each game, stand alone single player challenges i.e. get 3 strikes in a row on bowling to unlock such and such (mainly pictures to use to represent your ingame account).

Theres also the big selling point and fun factor which is the multiplayer as far as I could see the vast majority can be played over Nintendo's Wireless Network which makes this a great title just for the cards/board games and quirkier mini games like bowling.

Sure there are a few titles which feel like fillers, but the game will last for a very long time before it ever gets old due to the aforementioned multiplayer and sheer amount of games.

I'd love to see a follow up to this title although I think they plundered every popular game possible in making this :/

 Best Ever Game

I have had this game for a year now and still play it most days. All 42 games are excellent and the stamp system encourages you to try them all. It is also brilliant to play with other people who have got a Nintendo DS. Extremely good value - once you've got this game you will not want to play any others
