Feels more like a mini bonus game!!!

The best part of Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D is the built in demo of Resident Evil: Revelations (Nintendo 3DS) which is one of the best games on the 3DS. Mercenaries has pretty good graphics but the gameplay is very simple and a tad boring after a few hours play. I found the graphics were a little jerky now and then which was off putting. If you find shooting a endless supply of zombies with no substance fun, then you may enjoy Mercenaries 3D more then myself. The fact that you can't delete your game file normally is a real pain in the butt. There is apparently a way of deleting saves stored on the cartridge, albeit via a bit of third-party kit. According to a reader tip sent to Siliconera, NDS Adapter Plus (Backup DS Save Games) is a little USB device which allows you to back up and manage your DS and 3DS saves via a PC. It also allows save deletion. Anyway I can't help but feel this game should have been added on as a bonus with Resident Evil: Revelations.

I initially enjoyed this more than the new res evil 3ds game. The controls are tight and the graphics are excellent. But its a bonus game. There's nothing the keep you interested. It should be free with a magazine. Its about as deep as a conversation with Frankie Cocozza. Dont buy it.

Good, but not really a Resi game...

...as such, yes there's the chance to play as Hunk and Barry from Resi 1, but all the game play is from RE5, they could have thrown in a few other older revamped levels from older games, all n all, it passes the time, good but its just a money spinner really.

A fun 3DS shooter, however better if you're an RE fan

Going into this game and looking for a great story, you'll be quite disappointed, for it has none. This is quite simply the mercenaries mini game from the Resident Evil franchise, with a few added tweaks and, of course, in 3D. As an avid RE fan, I thoroughly enjoyed this game. it's simple, addictive and works well on the 3DS (and playing it online works well too). However, it does get quite repetative after you've finished all the levels and unlocked the majority of the trophies. (yes, it has trophies) All and all, a decent shooter, but appeals more to the RE fans than general fans of shooter games.

  Happy hunting!!!

  Great gameplay but wasted potential

Cons first:
-awful FX and voice quality, music not so bad but still lacks the clarity of Pilotwings/SSF4/Zelda. Dunno whether this is down to lack of cartridge space or whether playing all audio at full quality would affect the frame rate, but it's still a let down
-choppy frame rate for distant enemies. Although once you're used to it, like the static backgrounds in SSF4 this doesn't really matter
-shallow 3D (although this does allow for very long play sessions with no discomfort, I would have liked the option, there is a 3D slider after all)
-awful presentation, pre-game screens make it look like an iPhone game, it's as bare-bones as it comes. Furthermore, if u know RE4 and 5, when you get an item in the main game, a nice sound plays and a spinning graphic appears on the screen (this also happens in RE4 mercs). Now, in this game, when you unlock something, no nice spinning graphic, no nice 'unlock' sound, just some text on the bottom screen and a tiny icon. How hard would it have been to have a proper graphic?? And yeah no story, on the one hand this makes perfect sense, but on the other, I can't help but think that if they really had made an effort, then some kind of story could have been brought in and worked really well.
- online doesn't allow you to carry on playing with the same person for more than one game in a row (unless they're a friend maybe, I've only played with randoms worldwide)
- online doesn't allow you to restrict games by region. Can have some noticeable lag as a result
-no erasing your save file of course, for me a lot of the fun and addiction comes from working towards unlocking things and getting s-ranks, but if they were all already to be there? You'd still get a good few hours fun but there wouldn't be that reason to keep coming back

OK so that all sounds bad, but on the plus side...
- online works well most of the time and playing with a second player is cool
- nice difficulty ramp, early levels are nice and easy, then at level 4-5 you'll struggle with many characters to get the high ranks, then on EX levels you'll struggle to stay alive at all! Of course, I've died a fair amount on levels 4-5 but mostly to the instant kills from the double-chainsaw guy
- proximity mines RULE, they can really help with covering your tracks and making sure no one sneaks up behind you while you check an area out
- good graphics (aside from aforementioned frame rate issues), and the 3D is subtle but it definitely gives a graphical boost (unlike some other titles where 3D can be a compromise due to jaggies)
- great gameplay as long as you don't spam melee kills, which would be kinda boring. I STRONGLY urge that you get into move-and-shoot, it really adds to the fun, review sites mostly say they don't use it much but they really are missing out, furthermore you really, REALLY should get good with control type c which uses the face buttons as a second analogue stick. Don't get me wrong, the first time I tried it, it seemed horrible and I ditched it quickly. But then I came back to it and persevered, and the advantages of not only strafing while turning, but also, true moving and shooting (i.e. with the ability to change your aim while moving) far outweigh the fact that it isn't analogue. And with practise you'll only get more precise with your aiming this way, I have no trouble getting headshots and knee-cap shots now (although for any sniper rifle characters, the default controls are still what you'll want to use).

Despite all the flaws, there really is a lot of fun to be had with this game, and it's great for the commute. I couldn't give it more than 3 stars though just because of the lost potential.

I really liked it Great Game!

A lot of criticism about this game is that it has no story and it is not worth the money you pay for it. I personally believe that this game is a lot like Tetris, it does not have a story you just play it and enjoy it. I found this game to be a really good edition to my first 3DS bundle and has some very good features. If you like Resident Evil and you like just running around, shooting some zombies, trying to unlock new skills and characters by getting the best score then this is a good game.

I enjoyed the Mercenaries a lot in the previous Resident Evil games and I had no problem with this, online works well and the 3D is excellent definitely fun to play with, the only thing I did not enjoy is the demo of Revelations I expected something like a 20 minute demo of the first mission for I completed that in less than a few minutes and is not worth buying this game just for that demo.

But as I said if you enjoy playing the Mercenaries and just shooting Zombies I would recommend this game it is not that bad honestly, game play works great for the 3DS and has some good replay value and graphics. Buy this game knowing that you are not getting a story, dont complain because there is no story because you have already been told.

  An adapted RE5 mini game

The other guy clearly didnt play mercenaries on RE5, this was never gonna focus on the story and it shouldnt be criticised for its lack of it, the game plays well despite the lack of second stick for aiming, makes turning corners a little awkward but its not so bad. Not the greatest RE title but its good to see more adult titles for DS/3DS, could be better menu system isnt brilliant and the control layout for the 3ds isnt suited to this type of game but it does well enough 7/10
