Sid Meier seemingly creates an endless stream of great games, and his streak is still unbroken. The Civilization franchise has been one of the best collection of strategy games on the PC, and I have thoroughly enjoyed the series. So, naturally, when I saw this game I just had to see what it was like, and I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised. I went in not expecting much but the game has ported well. Disappointingly, the game has been toned down so that it doesn't over complicate things on the DS' controls and the leaders don't have personalities like they do in the PC version (although it is quite ironic seeing Ghandi declaring war on you).Yet while some of the depth of the gameplay has been lost, it still retains that special something that makes it enjoyable. And with lengthy matches and multiplayer it can really last. Plus playing matches against a friend is really rather enjoyable.
its very addictive, few problems here and there e.g i bought it for the multiplayer but the multi isnt that custimizable and it takes hours to finish a game because you cannot save it like you can in single player. besides from small things like that, very good, well thought out and for this price, highly recomended!
I've always been a big fan of the Civ games and was wondering how it would fair on the very small screen. Naturally the DS power constraints means the game has very little in the way of flashy graphics but the strategy is right up there with the best of them. Unfortunately this incarnation is incredibly lightweight with conquests last merely a couple of hours rather than the days or weeks it would take to complete a PC version. Time moves very quickly and you get all the usual technological improvements. I'm really hoping they use this as the template for a more fully featured DS sequal as all the elements are there they just need to bulk it up a bit in terms of the length of game time and options.
First of all, i bought this game for the PS3 and was extremely dissapointed with it, as it was basicly Civ Light and lacked all the depth of its PC bretheren. The PS3 was capable of Soo much more.
On the DS However, it is almost identical to its PS3 Bretheren, but with cut down graphics.
This is what i expect from a handheld, not a console.
As such, the sheer convienience of Civ on a handheld was fantastic!!
For ore info, read my PS3 review as it has more info on my oppinion of the game. Truely an awesome game on the DS thats easy to lose hours of your life in..
Reccomended.
I love games that Sid makes and this one is no exception. To be able to take civ where ever you go is fantastic. Where things are not so great are some of the features that have gone since Civ 4.
For me the first gripe was that you can not disband units. And related to this if you have fortified your units in a city, you can't see whats there until you activate them. This really slows things down.
But I think the worse thing is the lack of manual. Civ games are known for the tome like manuals you get, and with this missing, it makes working out what changed a time consuming business.
If you have played any of the Civ games on PC before trying this, you would be spending quite a lot of time scratching your head wondering why you cant do something.
But lets end on the good bits. The best thing about this game is the ability to be able to complete a game in a reasonable amount of time. Only having a few hours a week to 'play', civ on the PC would take months for me to complete a game, on the DS I can play a game in a session, but what is supprising is you get the same enjoyment. Most of the boring micro management has now gone, which gives the game a brisk feel to the game. If I hadn't played civ on the PC, this game would be getting a 5 star.
