Arguably the Greatest Kart Racer Ever

Mario Kart virtually invented the character racing genre way back in 1992 and despite many sequels and copycats few have ever matched the quality of the original. Despite being designed for a handheld however this DS version is certainly amongst the best. A huge amount of effort has obviously been poured into this game and it contains all the single player and multiplayer features of the home versions.

Mario Kart has of course never been about realism but the GameCube version released a few years before took the series too far from its routes making most races more about luck than driving skill. Fortunately that is not the case here. Luck can still play a big part in races (the dreaded blue shell is still here) but skilled players will win more races than their opponents. The tracks themselves are also very well devised, featuring a mix of new courses as well as the best from previous entries in the series. Short cuts will save you time but are often risky, a mistimed jump can cost you a lot of time. Thanks to the excellent handling though any mistakes are the fault of the player and not the game.

The single player mode is packed with features but for most much of the longevity of the game will come from the multiplayer. Both the single and multi-card functions allow for up to eight players to race at once. It is worth owning a copy each however as this allows all tracks and characters to be used as well as tracking player stats including the number of wins and losses. The game can also be played online but since many players utilise the 'snaking cheat' you will often find that there is no way you can possibly win and so it is better to stick to competing with friends.

Those that prefer racing sims like Forza or Gran Turismo will find the arcade handling and power ups frustrating but this is as good as multiplayer racing gets.

Some of the first mario kart games going back years.. Super mario kart.. mario kart super circuit.. mario kart 64.. Every system has a mario kart. Now its the NDS's turn. Mario kart DS, after bringing out mario kart DD for the gamecube.. out comes another one, and its better than all the rest. Now you can play 32 tracks on your DS using your favourite mario characters. There is three CC's you can do.. but possibly more to unlock. The graphics are great, the gameplay is great, and now you can battle with your friends. Using DS to DS wi-fi.. Also there is a new improvement called "missions". You can use this to complete mario kart DS missions, there are 6 levels.. at the each of every level there is a boss you have to defeat. Depending on how well you complete these you will get ranked. This game is a must BUY

  Great fun!

Mario Kart ds is an exceptional game. There's no two ways about it. The format remains the same, but with each incarnation the game improves slighly, and this ds version is no different. All your favourite characters are here, with some extras thrown in. At the start of the game there are 6 characters, and 24 tracks to choose from. In its full unlocked state, the game offers 12 characters and 32 tracks. Not including the mirror mode. Which effectively doubles the amount of tracks. There is also the option to choose different karts for your character, introducing a slight tactical element to the game, but in reality, seasoned players will more than likely see this as little more than a gimmick. All three cc classes are here too, 50, 100 and 150. As-well as the time trial. Retro fans will be satisfied too, with the inclusion of 4 tracks from each of nintendo's retro consoles; the GBA, the SNES, the N64 and the GameCube. The staff ghosts are in there too, so replay value is good. In short, Mario Kart ds is a game that will provide hours and hours of fun. Well worth the money, and definately a keeper. Highly recommended.
