You might be thinking that a Grand Theft Auto game on the Nintendo DS would be horrible and not worth the price. If you think that, then I can only say that you are wrong. If you own a DS, and most people do, and you enjoy mature rated games with blood, violence and women, then THIS is your game!
GTA: Chinatown Wars is an amazing success! The unique art style, the gameplay mechanics, the way the touch screen is utilised - it all comes together like a jigsaw and produces, what I can only describe, as a masterpiece, Quite possible the best game on the DS.
The game itself is a massive achievement for the DS. You don't drive from a 3rd person perspective like you do in the console games. This game returns to the top down view roots from the old Game Boy versions of GTA. Whilst this seems to be a bad thing, it actually isn't and works perfectly on the DS. The city you're driving in is extremely well detailed and of top notch graphical quality. You may also recognise certain landmarks from GTA4 on this version, as you return to the same Liberty City as GTA4, minus the third island. To have one island is a big enough success, but to have TWO is excellent!
As is the case with almost every GTA title, the lock-on shooting system is quite clunky and can often prove to be very frustrating when you're trying to dispatch groups of enemies all at once. Shooting whilst driving is particularly bad, as you often need to be within millimetres of your enemy before your character will lock on to the car and open fire.
There has been a lot of controversy over the drug dealing "mini-game" that appears in Chinatown wars, but drug dealing is actually a very strategic method of making a quick buck in Liberty City. You will often have to hold onto a certain type of drug as you often get emails from dealers who are willing to pay you extremely high prices for a particular type of drug. It all adds up to be a very clever system that you will definitely need to master in order to earn money in Liberty City.
There is also a multiplayer component to Chinatown Wars, but I have not had the chance to try this out and I simply cannot pass judgement without doing so.
In all, this is a VERY good package, and at these exceptionally low prices, an absolute must-buy for any DS owner. If you buy this, you will not regret it. Trust me on that one!
