New Super Mario Bros features huge vivid 2D worlds inspired by those from the classic Mario adventures, but combined with beautifully rendered 3D characters which almost seem to jump out of the screen. Each world has a different theme and features multiple levels, which must be completed before progressing to the next one. Players must also master each world's mini fortress and beat a boss character before they can progress onto the next world. Only after defeating all of the bosses will a character be ready to take on the ultimate challenge of Bowser himself.

The Mario brothers have a few new tricks up their sleeves since their last side-scrolling adventure, utilising some all-new abilities to help them through this latest adventure. As well as the classic moves, they can add a spring to their step with three new jumps. To reach high ledges they can perform a triple jump or bounce off a nearby wall thanks to the handy wall jump ability. Our heroes can even get a small height boost by bouncing off the heads of conveniently placed enemies.

During the course of a level, our heroes can use a little artificial stimulation to really tip the balance in their favour. Some of the most popular power-ups from classic Mario are back, allowing players to use Mushrooms to grow, Fireflowers to fry their enemies and the elusive Starman to become invincible. However, the fun doesn't stop there, with a host of all new power-ups available including a mushroom that makes the player as big as the screen and one that can shrink them to the size of a mouse!

All this fun is too good not to share. Thanks to a host of multiplayer options players can enjoy the adventures with up to four players. Two players can battle it out wirelessly as they compete to collect stars on specially designed stages. Up to four players can also take part in a selection of touch-screen mini-games with only one game cartridge thanks to DS Download Play.
  • Jump, bounce and power-up through visually stunning side-scrolling worlds filled with Mushroom Kingdom madness
  • The worlds are swarming with classic enemies like Goombas and Koopas, but watch out for new foes, big bosses and unbelievable challenges
  • As Mario and Luigi, two players can battle for stars on specially designed levels over local wireless. The game won't end until one bro. reigns supreme.

 Achieves the improbable

This game manages to be refreshing and original as well as going back to its roots of simple 2d platforming. This game is simply a triumph.

For anyone who can remember (and enjoyed!) the time before Mario turned 3d - this game is a must buy!

For me, it's the little things that count - sound - all of the original sounds are back and I love it! From sinking in to a pipe to explore the dungeon below to the "Weyooo" sound of sliding down the flagpole at the end of the level.

So, it's ticking all the boxes as far as "keeping it simple" is concerned, how about the "thinking outside the box".. uh, boxes? Well, you'd find many ticks in these too with all the new power ups now available to Mario. The first time you turn in to Giant Mario and charge through everything is likely to be an experience you will remember for a while!

Overall, this is a superb return to form for "our Mario" and if you have a DS, you simply NEED this game!

Little replay value spoils a superb game

Gameplay, Excellent.
Graphics, Excellent.
Enjoyment, Fantastic.

Nintendo at the top of their game (almost). There are two drawback to this game. 1. No replay value once you have completed it and collected everything there is no incentive to play through it again. 2. Extremely poor use of the second screen, while playing the superbly well designed levels on the top screen the lower screen has a progress meter that should not be there, it was not needed for any of the mario games in the last 20 years and I would be very suprised to see it again, Nintendo could have made much better use of this.

Minor complaints aside it is still worth buying as it is a fantastic game.

Mario's going back to his roots

Do you remember the days when Mario used to run through the Mushroom Kingdom to rescue Princess Peach from the evil clutches of Bowser, instead of playing some pointless sport or board game? I do, and, thankfully, so does Mario.

New Super Mario Bros. is the first 2D Mario game since the excellent Super Mario World on the SNES back in 1991. 16 years later and Mario's still got it.
Once again Princess Peach has been captured by Bowser & Bowser Jr, so it's up to our favourite dungaree wearing plumber to save the day.
New Super Mario Bros. still has all of the classic of gameplay from the original NES and SNES titles without making it feel like an old game, but making it feel fresh and new instead. You have to work your way through each level, defeating or avoiding enemies whilst collecting coins and solving puzzles on the way. You can also unlock hidden secrets by collecting 3 Star coins which are hidden in each level. And let's not forget the Power-Ups, you still have the classics such as the Mushroom and the Fire Flower but now there are two new additions, first is the Mega Mushroom which makes Mario grow so much that he fills the screen, with this Power-Up you can smash almost everything in your path. The other Power-Up is the Mini Mushroom which shrinks Mario, allowing him to reach into small gaps; Mini Mario also has the ability to jump higher than Normal Mario.
The graphics are great too, even though the game is 2D the characters are 3D (very similar to Sonic Rush) which works really well. The level design is fantastic with some levels taking place in the sky or underwater; and the game is so bright and colourful, even the castle levels will make your Art teacher cry with joy.

New Super Mario Bros. also has a Multiplayer mode where you and a friend, who play as either Mario or Luigi, have to race through a level and reach the goal. The game includes "Single Card Download" so your friends can also get a taste of this game There are also some mini games too, but the majority of these are from Super Mario 64 DS, but they're still fun to play.

Overall this is a great game. The Single player mode is great and, at the same time, challenging. And with Multiplayer mode and mini games included, you'll be playing this for quiet some time. After all, Princess don't save themselves.

This game is just classic, definatly the best game I have for the DS, it took me back to when I used to play it on the SNES, and over the years it has just got better.

Also included with the normal missions, are mini games which are as addictive as the main game, and can be played 2 player with a friend through WIFI.

I've had this game for ages now and am not bored of it at all, I still love Mario and Luigi!

Don't even think about buying another game, buy this one.

Another must buy on the DS

This is by far one of my favourite Mario games of all time.

# The worlds look beautiful and the levels/stages are very well designed
# It's Mario
# Very nice looking graphics
# Still has an awesome sound track
# Loads of secret area's to unlock

# TOO short
# Can be frustratingly difficult at times
# Multiplayer is a bit of a let down
