 Great puzzle game

A great game for all ages that helps kids with spellings... Spell an object and it just appears for use in the game (I keep using jetpack and crocodile). Best game I've played on DS.

 fantastic learning tool

This game is brilliant it brought my 4year old son on with his reading and writing he can spell almost anything you ask him all from playing on this game. If he wanted a elephant he would find a book with the word in and spell it now he does it off the top of his head with anything. very intelligent child before game but it has helped him along very nicely.
A*

Sometimes you have to wonder what on earth goes through designers/play testers heads. Who on earth looked at the DS and decided to assign every face button to moving the camera around and leave everything else - character movement, object creation, object movement etc - to just the stylus. The end result is a game thats needlessly frustrating to control. The DS is hardly famed for the accuracy of the touch screen and it comes a real cropper here as every single touch has to be pin point accurate or completely the wrong thing happens. Touch the screen to pick up an object and inadvertantly send Maxwell shooting off to his untimely demise. Go to move Maxwell and find yourself dragging an object about instead. As you progress and the puzzles get more involved you'll have more objects on screen to juggle around combined with movement, which sometimes needs to be speedy and exact, and it all becomes hugely frustrating to play. And all this could have been avoided by simply assigning character movement to the d-pad and camera movement to the face buttons, leaving the stylus to deal only with objects. How Scribblenauts came to have this current control scheme is one of the great mysteries of game design - essentially a lesson in how to hamstring a mostly wonderful game.

Its a real shame as the guts of the game are hugely, hugely clever. Pretty much any object you can concieve can be brought into being and used to work your way through the world. For the most part things behave as they should, with the odd illogical exception - example, blowtorch unable to cut through metal. Its forgivable though - trying to predict every conceivable interaction would be a mammoth task to programme. What has been achieved with the object database is an incredible feat and theres a vast amount of entertainment to be had just seeing what you can conjure and how it will react.

For the most part the puzzles reward imagination, but theres a number in there tha leave little scope to play, essentially requiring a specific object to be conjured to achieve the goal. A little more openess to really let yourself loose on the puzzles would have been nice. In action mode though, this is less of a concern with your progression through the level limited only by your imagination.

Occasionally you'll find yourself falling back on the same old objects again and again (the jet pack is a useful favourite) as other options won't fit in the space available.

Well worth a play, if only to appreciate the size and complexity of the object database, its just a shame that the minds that created this game couldn't stretch to giving it a sensible control scheme. So an almost great game, a seriously promising game that is never far from an exercise in frustration and thus the experience is often soured.

 Fantastic!

Scribblenauts is excellent. I was a bit dubious at first because I didn't think that the 'Write Anything' concept would work all that well, but it is really quite effective. I am on Level 5 at the moment. Each level has 8 sub-levels and there are two modes of play. For people who like puzzle-solving there is a puzzle mode for each level/sub-level, and for those people who want to play action-adventure type games, there is a 'Get the Starlite' mode for each level/sub-level, in which your only task is to use objects to get the 'Starlite'. I am really enjoying it. It even let me use a Shrink-Ray in one bit, lol!

The controls (stylus-only) take a bit of getting used to and can often send Maxwell plummeting to his death off the edge of a cliff etc, which is the only reason that this review has scored 4 stars out of 5. Control pad controls would have made more sense, but this does not detract from the overall fun of the game.

This is the most fun that gamers will experience all year and you should buy this game as soon as possible!

Scribblenauts is like a breath of fresh air and great fun 2!

I have been a gamer for over 20 years and I love it when I come across a game which is very original and unique to play. It doesn't happen very often these days and Scribblents is amazing in so many ways. Every word I have typed in so far has come to life on the screen and there are many different ways to solve the puzzles in each level. My favourite creature that I brought to life to kill two bears is a dragon and I use wings the most on my little man to explore and help complete many levels. I go back to some levels as it's fun working out different ways to complete each level and you gain lots of points for this. The graphics are a bit simple and are very colourful but they suit this game very well. Scribblenauts is a must have game for all ds owners and the touch screen controls work fine for me but I am a very able gamer.

Truly fantastic game.. Even for a 29 year old!

Was lucky to get this on a recent trip to the US, so kept me busy on a long haul flight. It looked like a kids game, but it's so much more than that. There's literally hundreds of levels, granted some are really tough. The real addiction to this game comes from your own imagination..Pretty much everything can appear in your game world. If you can spell it, you can interact with it. Items have also been programmed to interact with other things, which sometimes leads to hilarious situations. Once you have completed the levels, which may take you until next year...you can do them again, but without using the same items you used the first time around. Yes it'll drive you crazy, but it will also enthrall you. To be honest my fiance was quite happy just playing around on the title screen for hours to see what she could do. It all got rather twisted when she had two tramps, Jesus and a Pony at a Church wedding. Buy this game now... You will not be dissapointed!
