I bought this game when it first came out hearing it was "The Best RPG ever!" I did not expect it would be as amazing as magazines and other people were makign it out to be but I thought it might be worth playing.
The game opens up well the assassination of the emperor makes for an interesting introduction however once you enter the overworld map you begin to realise that the game revolves around walking from place to place rather than fighting. I felt that the number of enemies was faar too low at times it felt just like real life (by which I mean uneventful)
I made a dark elf character on it and made him a mix between a close combat sword fighter and a destruction mage expecting that the combat would be good. Once I started combat my instinct was to use the sword, Once I used the sword I nearly wept it looks and feels like your charatcer randomly waves a stick at the enemy rather than cutting him with a blade. Once I suffered the atrocity of melee combat I turned to my magic which did more damage and was easier to hit with however once again I didn't feel any great sensation from using it. My first assumption was, well its the basic spell of course it isnt going to be great so I looked forward to getting more powerful spells which I soon did only to find that every fire spell and lightning spell uses the EXACT same animation and only does increased damage. Once this happened to me I was incredibly disappointed with the enemies being no challenge (I had the difficulty at roughly 80%)
Once I heard that I would have to go into Oblivion myself I thought "Great! finally some enemies that may be able to harm me" once I went in I was disappointed to find that all the enemies in Olbivion are weak as hell, it took me until just before the end of the game to find enemies that could seriously wound me in Oblivion.
Moving onto the story of this game, when playing it I felt my charatcer was a very deatatched errand boy for some generic NPC's infact the only characters I encountered who held any significance were Jauffre and Martin, all the other time I felt like I couldn't care less which is very different to how I felt when I played Deus Ex and Final fantasy 8 on the PC.
On a different note, the graphics for this game are amazing there's no doubting that the people look realistic and that the landscapes are beautiful but to me this is like putting a tuxedo on a tramp. The developers should have spent more time making the game enjoyable and challenging before making it look nice
in conclusion this game is probably the dullest RPG I have played in recent years, I could only bring myself to play it whenever all my other installed game were also completed. I also remember playing it when I split up with my girlfriend and I felt even more despressed because of it. Also to add an extra comment on the sword combat, I've got the right to judge how bad it is because I do Kendo in real life and its very exhilirating unlike this game. My final word one this is the one I opened with in the title.....boring
