The creators of the award winning S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow Of Chernobyl and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky are proud to present their latest's installment, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call Of Pripyat.

Ukraine, 2012. A highly contaminated area known as the "Zone" has been cordoned off by military authorities after an explosion gave rise to strange local anomalies. Paramilitary mercenaries and fortune hunters, the "S.T.A.L.K.E.R.s" risk their lives to trade valuable artifacts found in the area. The Ukrainian military have sent in an advance party of five helicopters to scout the area and gain control, not a single one has returned.

You play the role of secret agent, Alexander Degtyarev, operating under cover as a S.T.A.L.K.E.R; you must enter the Zone and discover whats happened.

  • Experience the photorealistic, recreated areas around the Chernobyl reactor
  • Explore three vast areas: the Pripyat River basin, Jupiter industrial complex and the city of Pripyat
  • Extensive open game world where every action has a reaction
  • A thrilling background story with over 70 side-quests

I am reviewing the Polish version of the game which essentially comes in the same package as the UK edition - 5 art postcards, map of the zone, game DVD & booklet. (still hoping that we'll have an opportunituy to see the US/German version with added collectible extras and case)

With one word the games is EXCELLENT!

The graphics engine has been revised, and looks better than ever with all modern effects included (no lagging peformance as with DX10.1 patch for Clear Sky).

Character & monster models have been reviewd and improved - now even scarier and more detailed. Plus a few new ones to be encountered! New behaviours have been added as well.

Revised game mechanics. New shooting system. Added stimulants/remedies for short term in game bonuses.

All brand new locations, with marvelous details.

And most importantly - game play. New behaviours and new artifacts bring a new gameplay level to the game. Quests come in a few varieties, from simple bring an item, to multitier ones. Main storyline is simply gripping, you just can't get away from the PC. World is with more 'gradient' - factions mix more - you can see stalkers, bandits and other enjoying a drink in the local heaven side by side.
(Just to give away a few plot items - find who is stealing form the stalkers, sneak into bloodsuckers nest with a fellow stalker to complete your quest, investigate all helicopter crash sites in the main quest and find out what happened to the crews - but be careful new anomalies are even deadlier than before!)

The only 'drawback' is the outdoors rendering - less folliage than Clear Sky and terrain seems to be a bit 'simplistic'. I guess this decission was to improve performance. SSAO effects seem a bit too strong at times, but this is not really a bother.

Of course Stalker was always about the indoors and not the outdoors!

I got the game just after new year and simply find it amazing. It is properly balanced, no annoyances esp. quest-related, such as 'capture depot' appearing over and over again. Simply best of both previous stalkers, with lots of new improvments!
(I'm already waiting for the fourth installment of the series!)

Before you buy the game, make sure you don't have any serious commitments, as you will surely forget about the world outside the zone!

After what seems like an eternity (over 4 months infact) since the russian language release we are finally seeing a release date for STALKER; CoP. And for many this has been for too long to wait. (Me included, this is infact a reveiw of the russian language version played with a BETA version of a closed caption mod but it is essentially the same)

For those uninitiated STALKER is a unique first person shooter set in the exclusion zone arround Chernobyl NNP which uses a blend of Atmostphere, openness and a pinch of RPG.The series is renound for its difficulty and its immersion. I would encourage people to check out 2007's STALKER; Shadow of Chernobyl.

a note to those who played cleay sky, this game is much more stable, runs smoother and is more compatable (Dx7 all the way to DX11)

Right, lets talk gameplay and gameplay enhancements, the inventory, medpacks, bandages, and especially upgrades system have all seen major enhancements with the addition of new drugs. It all feels highly intuitive and a world apart from the frankly broken "Clear Sky". The weapons are now even more functional and realistic with improved bullet physics and better all round balence (pistols are now more important etc).

A quick travel system has mercyfully been fully intergrated to accomadate the totally revamped and larger levels. This new even more open play areas (there are 4 in total) are HUGE and contain a lot of life thanks to the improved a-life system performing in an exellent way in almost all instances. Mutants are more deadly, better spaced and intellegent (the Snork is down right deadly this time) and wandering bands of STALKERS will have realisitc firefights with bandits. One letdown is that AI cheracters no longer take cover as well as in Clear Sky but this is a small niggle in a an otherwise much improved AI.

The large levels also accomadate lengthy and well fleshed out side quests that make up a good portion of the available gameplay, the main story can be compleated in arround 6 hours (think of it as STALKER; epidose 1) but the sidequests often can compete with the main quest to hold the intrest, one such involving a whole basement ful of bloodsuckers.

The Story is a bit of a letdown, the premise is shown above and thats pretty much it, your a stalker (well stalker milliraty spy thing), your in the zone investigating some crashes it is well told and builds up a little more along the way (some in engine cutscenes make an overdue appearece). None of the delicious glimmers of "roadside picnic" that peppered the first game but it does the job, anyway STALKER is firmly in the groove of games like HL2 in that the game unfolds as you play it rather than being told about it.

Graphically the game is a mixture of the sublime and the... not so sublime. overall it creates a distictive effect with dtynamic pretty much everything but some lazy texture mapping and bad textures still occur. The lighting is amazing and the character models are much improved but it still lacks the polish of most modern big FPS hitters.

This eddition looks solid (although the germans and russians got a lighter! and some cool patches. and a nice tin.) for a special edition its good value.

BOTTOM LINE
The main praise of Call of pripyat is the Zone itself feels rich and lived in once more, immersion is an understatement and terrefying x18 stlye labs make a welcome reapearence (including one incident involving the sound of a crying baby...) its not perfect and to an extent feels dated but its made with love and you still won't find anything like it anywhere else.

This is the third in a series of very good games, that use atmosphere, coupled with demanding but ultimately satisfying gameplay, to deliver one of the richest experiences in videogaming. There's a lot to do here, you can hunt for anomalies and sell them to get better gear or use them to increase your stats, explore the 3 giant areas (although the last one, pripyat, isn't that big) down to the smallest place, meet all sort of different characters and solve quests in whichever way you prefer (putting it way too simply, you do them as what most would see as the "good guy" or the "bad guy" way, though in the Zone that hardly means anything). It's up to you to decide what to do and how to do it.

It improves upon the previous games flaws, like having a much better UI, better pacing, more interesting sidequests (less of the fetch A and deliver to B type, some are really interesting!)

As for the special edition, the art cards are awesome, the soundtrack is the best in the series yet, but the Zone map is underwhelming

Worth the purchase, most definitely.

 Not the special edition

Just a quick note to say, this is not the special edition as pictured, so you won't get the zone map, soundtrack CD etc.

Personally I don't really care, but it's nice to know what you're actually getting. If you particularly want the extra goodies, look elsewhere.

It's a great game though.

a very very good game, i have the set, pity it was too short, a slight criticism, why cant we go back to the underground tunnel from which the group emerged in pripyat
