 How to get it to work on Vista

| | See all Dreaming11's reviews (1)

I have had this game for years, absolute classic and beats most newer RTSs in terms of strategy - but it is pretty buggy and EA dropped the ball on support. As for getting it to work in Vista - this is down to lazy programming by EA which meant that when the location of the my documents folder changed in Vista, it no longer created the necessary files. It is easy enough to do this yourself though:

Go to your "User\Documents\Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour Data" folder and create a new text file. Copy the following text into it:

AntiAliasing = 6
BuildingOcclusion = yes
DrawScrollAnchor =
DynamicLOD = yes
ExtraAnimations = yes
GameSpyIPAddress =
Gamma = 50
HeatEffects = yes
IPAddress =
IdealStaticGameLOD = High
LanguageFilter = true
MaxParticleCount = 5000
MoveScrollAnchor =
MusicVolume = 55
Resolution = 800 600
Retaliation = yes
SFX3DVolume = 79
SFXVolume = 71
ScrollFactor = 50
SendDelay = no
ShowSoftWaterEdge = yes
ShowTrees = yes
StaticGameLOD = Low
TextureReduction = 0
UseAlternateMouse = no
UseCloudMap = yes
UseDoubleClickAttackMove = no
UseLightMap = yes
UseShadowDecals = yes
UseShadowVolumes = yes
VoiceVolume = 70

Then save the file but save it as options.ini.

It should work then :-)

 Looks a bit dated but still the best Real Time Stragedy game

Although not a classic in terms of it predecessor - Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2. This game is still excellent although the story is not as engaging as Red Alert 2.

For £10 though who's complaining?

Play as the allies, China or Peoples Liberation army in story mode to achieve there campaign victory.

The gameplay follows all those before it. With your base building kit, set up a base and beginning building power plants, weapons factories and then eventually your arsenal of weapons to take on the enemy.

The mamoth tank is my favourite and in groups are unstoppable.

This is a must buy for any RTS game fan. Graphically it does look dated but most graphics cards that are DX9.0 and above will play this on max settings and resolution.

Multiplayer over your home netweork or internet is great as 4 or more players can build on a map and fight to the death
A great value package

 RTS - Very Fast Paced.

I'v played this game since release late 2003. (Very well known online!) this game is the best. All other rts are usually slow paced (well 5min till fights) but this... This u can end most 1v1 fights in pro games in under 3min! Losing 1 supply stash is like losing a army. Very very heated battles over supplys and espically oils on twlight flame (defcon 6 with the patch on 2005) i shun ea for there servers very poor and there is no online support at all. I'v never needed support really most online "pros" (commander in cheifs) thats still play are long time players and will usually help... Most of the "kids" that like new and shiney games that do fail.. (Sorry but generals+zh are easily better then tiberium wars and ra3).

This cnc is the best!

 It's Time to Command & Conquer
