  Bad Rap!

It seems to me that this game has generated a lot of bad reviews from people that A) have no understanding of the mechanics of the gameplay or B) think that every game should follow the template of Halo or Call Of Duty.
What we have here is a game that follows on directly from the original AvP game made by Rebellion in that it carries on it's old school gameplay. The game has 3 separate campaigns, one for each species. I have seen criticism that these campaigns re-use the same levels and while this is true there are areas of each levels certain species will never see. This criticism can also be levelled at the recent Halo games as well which re-cycle whole levels and portions of levels in new ones yet seem to get away with it. At least these levels hold something different for each species.
The Alien AI is the best I have seen in any Alien game, it uses the walls and darkness to it's advantages, leaps from cover to cover to get closer to the player and is amazing to watch in action.
I have also never before played a game that made me feel like I was finally experiencing playing as a Predator like in the movies.
The visuals running on DirectX 11 can look amazing at some points, especially the details on the characters which have much better texture work than the console versions. The games multiplayer has been a bone of contention among the community with some people outright hating the melee system implemented. If this is given enough time to be learnt it actually becomes quite an effective fighting system and the first I have seen implemented into a multiplayer game so well. The game features standard deathmatch modes as well as Predator Hunt and the brilliant Infestation which picks a player to be an Alien picking off a full squad of marines who then become the aliens allies. Great fun.
All in all if you give the game a chance it really is great fun in both SP and Multi. Just expect something different from your usual run of the mill sci-fi or real world shooters.
My favourite game of 2010.

This has to be the worst game I've played online and I had sniper ghost warrior....avp is worse, the level of play is abysmal, the games are frantic, which as a fun few minutes is fine, but the sheer lack of skill makes this game abysmal for the longer period.

Avoid this game.

  Pathetically Typical

I was very much looking forward to this shooter and I was following it closely, I don't normally write reviews on products like this but this game is so utterly poor and very typical of the way the Games Industry is run now.

The game on release was filled with bugs, balance issues and simple problems that could have easily been fixed if the coders of the game had taken the time to spend about a week or two fixing them. As mentioned in other reviews you have the very obvious problem of the developers deciding that an instant kill button was appropriate for multiplayer gaming. Adding to that they have made horrible balance changes each time they bothered to patch the game particularly in regards to the predator race which everyone in the game plays because you automatically win.

When it comes to the basic interface options and lobbying this game fails dramatically in every aspect. Until recently there was no support for dropping into games that were in progress, you would actually have to sit and wait for players to show up before playing. I don't know what the developers were thinking when they decided to make it so that no one can change races when actually inside the game so that the teams would stay equal in numbers if people left.

I could go on and on listing everything wrong with this game but honestly, I'll save you all the time, there is a very good reason this game is priced at 4.99 and it isn't because it is a bargain.

It is absolutely sickening and baffling that games companies with billions of funding behind them cannot hire at least reasonably competent and dilligent programmers or QA staff or at least train some so that they won't be beaten by one man coding a game in his free time while at a regular job. This is exactly what is happening, I am of course referring to the man behind Minecraft, World of Goo a puzzle game was developed by two people and both are equally superior in their own right merely as products nevermind what genre they are when compared to this game.

Go and spend your money elsewhere maybe you should buy a classic game if you want to buy a game with that kind of money.

I recommend Deus Ex, it is far superior to Aliens vs Predator and about two pounds cheaper.

good but dissapointing in alot of areas

Fairly good graphics and gameplay but let down by alot of things. Lack of weaponry with the marine gets tedious after a while trying to stay alive with a pistol. Alien is good but its attack is about as fearsome as a pussy cat and the predator is spotted to easily.
So that just makes for an often miserable gaming experience.

Online players need to open port settings on your router to be able to join most games, so there are more people playing it than on first impressions. Online gaming is not very satisfying but will give it another try sometime however games like batman arkham asylum are a better buy etc

I had played the original alien vs predator and it's sequel and had high hopes for this game. After playing it for about 30 minutes I thought it was a let down. Worse still I can't even give it away because its registered to steam which is required to play meaning it cant even be sold on. To be fair the steam bit annoyed me more than the game disappointed me. Take my advice play a demo before you commit and know that it cant be sold on unless you set up a new steam account just for that game to sell with it.

All aboard the Insta kill train baby!

Seems the majority of my reviews can come of as negative reinforcement for the grumpy old geezer i trully am, I sometimes recoil at the sturn borderline mean reviews i give some games and i indeed begin to reconsider my words but then a harsh reminder crosses my path and i remember all over again. Now i played this game some time ago when it first came out i got through the entire Singleplayer and sampled the multiplayer for several weeks including the demo (you know the demo with the one map) The singleplayer experience was an interesting hybrid of stealth/speed and survival horror the latter serves as the only semi well thought out part of this game. So what is wrong with other two races you say well the Alien is an easy repetitive albeit immersive short experience which will seems cool at first but the enemy AI isn't too bright so you will rack up the kills like Ted Bundy. The predator at first seems like the best of the three he has all his signature moves but his campaign will have you combing over the same areas as the others and after a while of performing your killer"fatalities" repetition will start to set in as you constantly watch Predators overbearing overly dramatic pauses as he fondles different parts of the human anatomy (its also short).

The human campaign is the only one of merit ramping up the tension quite nicely....(in the first 3 levels that is) after that it's all out doors gone is the dark brooding sense of forboding replaced with linear outdoor segments and temples (which are kind of cool with the Alien as you can traverse the roofs walls and scare the poor scientists with your hiss) but all of this caps of with 3 uninspired lackluster endings even setting up a sequal of all things...well we will see how things pan out in that respect.

Multiplayer can be fun with some serious balance issues. Predator starts of with no weapons so he must traverse the levels to find and equip some of his more potent weponry its all here and its all looking fairly impressive predator fans will be impressed, Colonial Marines have the basic assortment of pistols, pulse rifles and of course the smart gun i would include the other weapons but they are not really worth mentioning. To combat the speed and stealth of the others the Marines have motion trackers, its constant beebing will have you on edge dreading what is behind the next corner, they also have a mele attack which can disable your speedy opponents for a short duration allowing you to squeez of the kill....but all of this is for naught however when you discover the inbalanced nightmare that is the Alien. Able to attack quickly and move light lightning the Alien has no problem getting behid the others. (All oboard the insta kill train!) The Alien and predator respectively have insta kill ablilites when behind an opponent its over powered and serves to infuritate the other players, couple this with the fact that when in this stance you can't even move you can expect the next enemy behind you waiting paitently for his next cheap kill. This is AVP not the doll que! The maps are decent for the most part and the graphics engine is fairly solid the animations are breathtacking at times and it all feels fairly imersive when controlling these different races also there are audio logs and achievments to collect just inscase you wern't sick of that with other games.

In conclusion this is potential gone to waste,Nice graphics and Immersive tension building levels for the ammount there are do not excuse bland level design recylcled maps truly mind bogeling game play choices and a lackluster campaign stroy arch all around. Stick to AVP2.

"COME ON KILL ME IM HERE KILL ME NOW"

In all honesty i never played any of the old versions of avp but i did get this version. I have to say graphically it is pretty good and i have had some good moments in the game. Sound is great just like the movies it is based upon. I have not been on multiplayer enough to comment on it yet but i am sure with a group of friends who have the game too this would be a blast. I would say give this a try if you have never had any other avp game before it is a lot of fun as games should be.

  really let down :(

looks good sounds ok plays average - thats it the offline single player games are similar and very repetative, on first release on the PC it was full of bugs and annoying errors from not working on dx10 to just silly wall climbing bugs - i wont comment on the online MP / DM games because the pc community is / has already dropped it and ran screaming.

  dissapointment

i`ll give a review to the demo. i wanted to play this game seriously, but the demo was a big let down. the graphics and sound are very convincing and the scenario is of course great, beeing an avp fan !! this game concentrates on online gaming, but to cennect to a game takes for ever !! when you get to play a game in the end, i could have played like 2 matches cod mw2. the community is dead. i hope they learn from their mistakes and improve online-netcode & servers. the gamemodes are actually good, when u get to play them with someone.
