I wanted so much to love this game. I played Sid Meier's Railroad Tycoon on the Amiga, then both sequels on PC, and loved every one of them. When I learned the man himself was working on a new version, I couldn't wait to get my paws on it.
Unfortunately, I was let down. This game looks shiny and pretty and runs nicely, and it's really simple and easy to pick up and play... and that's the problem:
It's just too simple. At no point did I feel challenged, mentally, tactically, strategically, however you want to put it. All the depth has been ripped out in the quest for a more fun experience. But I ask you; is a player who's attracted to a railway management simulator the sort of player who wants simple controls and fun, arcadey gameplay? I don't think so.
This is Railroad Tycoon Lite, and best avoided by anyone who enjoyed the previous titles. Perhaps if you're after an interesting, instructional game to entertain your children, this would be a good choice, but otherwise I would look elsewhere or, like me, stick to Railroad Tycoon 3 (which is now available very cheap on Steam).
Let me start by saying that i've never played a train Sim before. I enjoyed this and I imagine for someone who likes building train sets that this is a bit of simple fun. the first thing I thought is that it sort of looks similar to Civ4 but that isn't a bad thing, its a very easy game to get into and I feel there's enough there to keep it a challenging game, I would recommend this game to players that like the idea of building virtual train sets as this game is a easy introduction into management Sims. Definitely worth the £5.00 price tag and because it's that price am giving it 4 Stars.
the overall quality of the game is fantastic but i think there should be more modern trains and dates dating even into the future. if this was added i think it would be top class. i mean if it streched from the 1800s to say 2300s thats 500 years of training gameplay.
this is a must for anyone who had a model railway when they were little. the game play is easy to get into and the graphics are so polished compared to the other games in the railroad tycoon series. the game has a great bidding system to help you get an advantage over your competition. this is a traintastic game B-)
A must needed improvment to the original, but i still feel this game doesn't meet up to expectations which surrounded it before release with the graphics still patchy and the game having multiple bug issues.
But on the whole this game is still fun and you can enjoy many hours of fun before it begins to get slightly repetitive.
