The first Mass Effect game was nothing short of fantastic, and is one of my all time top games to go back and play again. Mass Effect 2 manages not only to deliver just as good a game but exceeds the first one making it just about one of the most perfect games I've ever played.
Mass Effect 2 cleverly builds on the all the good points from the first game, and anything that didn't quite work has instead been stream lined and re done to work this time round.
An example is simple things such as the inventory, which in the first game was slightly annoying in the sense that there was too much to sort through and choose in terms of weapons armor and even ammo. Mass Effect 2 has reworked it all making it easier simpler to use, instead of collecting loads of different bits of equipment your team will upgrade to what ever is best, different ammo types can be selected by just the touch of simple button instead of taking time up from enjoying the game.
What they've really done here though is not simply clone what they did in the first Mass Effect, they've built upon it enhanced it and generally approved the game in every single way.
But as always what really draws me to the game is the characters and the story, and here is where Mass Effect 2 is at its strongest. This game leaves you eagerly waiting for the third game which I hope is already being worked on.
Having given all this praise there are a few things I felt could have been done differently, for one thing you can now visit planets and scan them for resources. This is a fun little side thing to do and is needed for different upgrades you want to use, what is slightly annoying is that you constantly have to hold the one mouse button down as you scan which can become quickly tiresome. What would have been nicer is just a simple one click and you entered into scanning mode and a simple click again to exit scanning mode. Its a small complaint but there's a number of small things like that which could have been done slightly better, but seeing as this has been released on a number of different systems is understandable.
The other only real complaint I have is some scenes are lacking in music as in there feels to be very little music at all at times. Some scenes I felt could have become much more powerful or moving if some music had been put to them.
Other then that Mass Effect 2 does not put a single foot wrong in this excellent game, buy it now the universe needs saving!
There is a serious lack of continuity from the first Mass Effect which had a much more dramatic and purposeful storyline. This in effect makes Mass Effect 2 not so much a sequel but more a stand alone game as the main character goes from working for the Citadel Council the guardians of galactic peace to working for human supremacists. Supremacists who in the first ME were portrayed as an evil group involved in all sort of experiments that usually involved the great suffering of their victims. This dark and unpleasant Cerburus past is only vaguely hinted at in ME2 and as for the Citadel Council their mention in ME2 is hardly noticeable and I doubt Shepard would betray the Alliance let alone the Citadel Council and work so easily for Cerburus which is a group that seemingly has the funding and supplies of major galactic governments.
In their strive to correct the criticism of ME the developers have gone too far and lost is character customisation in terms of quantity of weapons and equipment and armour that they have literally undone much of what made ME great and I am inclined to revisit ME for replaying more than I am ME2 as you go from been able to customise all your characters in ME to only really been able to customise the player character in ME2. EA are clearly trying to cash in on the fan bases by making us customers pay for additional content much of which is rubbish considering the price. Don not get me wrong it is a good game, but there are a lot of elements of ME that make that a better and more involved game. I have no idea how the developer is going to link the story lines of ME which they have broken in ME2 for the finale that should be ME3. I can only hope they take a step back to ME to take ME3 forward as they clearly have not done this for ME2.
I can completely recommend this game. It is absolutely brilliant. One of the best written games around and in recent memory. It has something for everyone. if you like gaming, you should own this. Full stop.
I was really looking forward to this game for a long time. BioWare did a great job yet again. The story line is good and interesting but it felt rather short. Most of the game you will be dealing with side quests. I would have liked something more of a story driven adventure with the occasional side quest, not the other way around but anyway...moving on...
The game looks stunning. I think they took the Unreal Engine to it's limit, characters are richly detailed and game play is smooth. I think i would have liked a bit more gore...but that's just me. :)
The soundtrack is very good as well, on par with the first one. There are quite a few memorable tunes throughout the game.
All in all game is very good, well worth the money. :)
Having been a big fan of Mass Effect 1, I had been waiting for Mass Effect 2 for ages. Have just this minute completed it and... WHAT A GAME!!
10/10
Improved in every way from an game which i thought already would be hard to beat.
The story leads on from Mass Effect 1, so if you haven't played it, it may be worth playing that one first to fully understand what is going on, however all the information is there for you if you are new to the Mass Effect trilogy.
You control your own destiny and actions, you can explore the galaxy how ever you want and when you want, you can choose all sorts of characters to follow you into battle.
You can even get it on with the ladies if you like!
How you play the game effects how you will be in Mass Effect 3, like wise, how you had your character in Mass Effect 1 can be imported into Mass Effect 2.
How the game pans out is up to you, choose your ending, there are multiple.
This is a shooter meets RPG style game with a HUGE storyline that keeps you gripped. The cut scenes are fantastic - and - there are different ones depending on how you lead your character!
Large game, hours of enjoyment, can NOT fault this game.
