Rail Simulator is the next step in railway simulation. It allows the player to take on the role of a train driver and guide a number of contemporary and historical trains through several meticulously recreated routes in the UK and Germany.

The player is made responsible for everything involved in getting an electric, diesel or steam train started and to keep it rolling; from observing the track signals and keeping within the speed limits, to keeping an eye on the steam pressure and making sure to remain on track through treacherous winding routes.

The game offers unprecedented graphics and attention to detail for the genre, with the trains realistically modeled down to individual, fully functional, gauges, buttons and levers. Rail Simulator also incorporates a full physics simulation, as well as having accurate signaling systems throughout all the routes.

Players can create new routes through a powerful and easy-to-use game editor, and exchange them online with other players. Recreate your local commute or create new routes from scratch, with a point-and-click editor and a huge amount of adjustable in-game assets.
  • The most realistic train driving simulation ever.
  • Travel over 1900km of track on four faithfully reproduced UK and continental routes.
  • Choose between eight accurately modeled modern and historical locomotives - electric, diesel and steam-powered.
  • A powerful world and track editor - create new routes and content and exchange them with other players online.
  • Learn to drive different kinds of trains using fully functional controls, levers and gauges.
  • Varying driving modes, from Easy to Simulation difficulty.
  • An outstanding physics engine that provide new levels of realism to the simulation.
  • Third-party expansion packs will add new routes and content throughout the game's lifetime, significantly expanding on the core offering.
  • Access historical and technical information on routes and trains as you drive.

After seeing many screen shots and videos for this, i was still a bit dubious about it. I thought it would play like Trainz 2004/2006 which was rubbish !! But i got a chance to play an early version of the game thanks to a PC magazine competition and it was AMAZING !!!! It had the great realism of Microsoft Train Simulator but the ability to create and edit routes with ease like Trainz [the editor was the only good part].

Order it NOW !!!!!!!!!

It's not MSTS! give it a chance!

This simulator has really had a mixed bag of reactions from people. I think the problem is most people have bought this simulator and expected it to be very similar to the original MSTS, and because its not the same, the comparisons of why MSTS is better start. People should remember that this sim is completely different from MSTS, and while it has its problems so did MSTS, but as time has gone on, that simulator has slowly been improved.
Back to RS, when i first ran it i didnt think much of it, not easy to control, no decent instruction booklet, annoying features etc, however, now ive got used to it, i must say this simulator is great. The graphics are absolutely superb, while you do need a pretty good pc to run it, you can run it on lower settings.
The models made for this simulator are pure perfection, such as the 7F & Black 5. The detail to the textures is amazing. The sounds used are even better, with perfect beats to the locos. The slight let down to the steam locos is the steam, while it looks good in motion, it looks odd when the loco is static, it also doesnt react like it would in real life, doesnt get thrown out the chimney, just a constant flow like on MSTS, there is also no steam when the whistle is blown, which again is a shame. Rolling stock is a mixed bag, some of its good, some not so good. But the new downloadable rolling stock is an improvement, as are the new steam locos that can be downloaded. Routes are another great feature of this sim. Fantastic detail, my personal favourite route being the Somerset & Dorset, a very challenging drive.
Whilst there are problems with this sim, i think more people should give it a chance, not just run it once, think "ooh its not like MSTS" then put it on their cd pile. It is a great sim, and once some more add ons are released it will be even better.

The release is quite raw. Hopefully this gets fixed.

I am a hardcore train simulator fan since MSTS came in. And I am currently developing objects and rolling stock models for the Microsoft Train Simulator and Auran Trainz. I was waiting for the release of the Rail Simulator with the hope that it would replace MSTS and allow more detailed models, more control over the environment, better SDK and so on. Unfortunately the first release is quite raw. There's no SDK, however they promise it for free in November, under a separate license. Don't know what this means, but I hope I will be able to convert my models after all. Surprisingly there's almost no control of the simulator's environment in the release (a user can't even change season, weather and time of the day easily). I had a weird problem during installation when the installer did not copy the main simulator's file to its folder and it set restricted access rights that prevented me from copying the file from the DVD to where it belonged. The user interface is simplified and does not look good. A really weird problem - there's no possibility to avoid saving changes in edited tracks or scenarios (and undo does not always work reliably). There are only 4 routes and about 10 trains to drive. Trains' lights do not light anything and this is bad, because even MSTS had that feature. The sumulator has a weird keyboard layout that can't be changed. The developers are now collecting the feedback and I really hope that the first patch will address all the reported issues. It should be noted, that this simulator is a big step forward from MSTS, it supports much better (meaning high-polygon) models, it has more usable Route Editor and more flexibility. When (and if) SDK is released, third-party developers like me will create a lot of new content for the simulator. Hope the managers of the Railsim project do the right thing this time.

A few issues with this game need to be addressed before it gets 5 stars from me, if your looking for a train sim, this is definatly it..... but make sure you download the service pack for this game when its released as its got a few bugs in it....

 Totally Tedious

I have been a long time user of MSTS since it first came out. Not only do I drive the trains but I have created activities, scenery objects and a freeware route for MSTS. So I was looking forward to RS immensely. Unfortunately my first impressions were not favorable. As other reviewers have said the game is full of bugs and hardly lives up to the description of the product on the back of the DVD case. In short it doesn't do what it says on the tin. Naturally the graphics are a vast improvement over MSTS, and there are plenty of details in the routes, but out of the box the game is just a big bore. I hoped that the release of the development tools would improve things, but up to now very few third party scenarios have been released, which is IMO, testament to the over complex nature of the game. It's good to see some third party utilities appearing to simplify content creation, but why should the community spend time improving a product that promised so much before its release. I've now gone back to MSTS, which although is inferior graphically, is so much more pleasurable to use.
