Blood Bowl is the videogame adaptation of Games Workshop's famous board game of the same name.

A brutal team sport unfolding in a parallel fantasy world based on Warhammer and American football, Blood Bowl invites gamers to form a team of players from such races as Orcs, Wood Elves, Humans, Dwarfs and many other fantasy creatures, and launch themselves into battle in the bloodiest of arenas. This strategy sports game combines a fine balance of tactics and bonecrunching action! The game offers two game modes.

The first, which is fully real-time, offers a spectacular gameplay. Intense battles between blocking linemen and daring displays of agility of players leaping and dodging through opponents tackle zones, while powerful spells and dirty trick special plays are unleashed across the pitch; all this creates a highly charged atmosphere.

The second game mode, an actual turn-based game, is a treat for players of the original board game because it is an exact replica of Games Workshop's tabletop masterpiece. The original rules have been faithfully reproduced, and it contains all of the devices, strategies, play and rhythm of the original game.

The single-player experience allows the player to manage a team throughout an entire season of Blood Bowl, through the Old World of Warhammer. The team will evolve over the course of victories, experience gained and awards won. With its immense depth, the game can almost be considered as a management game, from managing the popularity and sponsorship of players to the purchase and sale of players, as well as their aging, retirement and even death.

In multiplayer, the player will be able to throw down a challenge to other Blood Bowl players and participate in large tournaments on the Internet in order to climb the official ranks.
  • Two radically different game modes: turn-based for a faithful adaptation of the board game, or real-time for intense and spectacular matches.
  • 8 different races, each offering its own style of play: Humans, Orcs, Skaven, Dwarfs, Wood Elves, Goblins, Lizardmen and Chaos.
  • Magnificent graphical rendering, literally giving life to the Blood Bowl miniatures!
  • Take part in a full Blood Bowl campaign to win the 15 championship trophies and cups while developing your own team.
  • Export your own team from a championship and play it in a One-Off Match or in multiplayer.
  • Create your own online league and challenge other player and participate to online tournaments on the Internet to rise your team on the top of the official online rankings!
  • Get started easily and progressively using the in-game tutorial and 3 levels of difficulty.

 Just like the board game

Blood Bowl was probably the first of Games Workshop's board games that me and my friends played on a regular basis that didn't require spending over £100 on various models, terrain, dice and all the other costs that most hobby games incur. The news that a game was in the works was therefore very exciting as it meant that my friends who have now since grown up and moved away are now able to pummel the stuffing out of each other all over again online.
the game is an IDENTICAL replica of the board game: the symbols on the dice, the rules and the names of all races and positions remain intact. It is therefore just as frustrating when a perfectly formed game plan goes completely out of the window due to shear bad luck!!! PLaying through about 3 hours of the campaign on medium difficulty, The game has a very shallow learnging curve but it must be approached as a strategy game. All your players stats improve as they continue playing, their survival of which becomes paramnount as the game progresses, lest they receive a sound kicking and end up dead!
It is a fun game, the online league system should ensure that many old players return to the game and some new ones should definately check it out if they fancy a game that includes chainsaws, orcs and tournaments.

 It's alright, mostly for fans

I bought this game directly through the developers website when it was first released. About £10 more than what Play are selling it for.
The game is based on a far more violent version of American football and in truth is a lot of fun once you know what you are doing.

Unfortunately its not easy to pick up and play and it will take a while for you to get a hang of it, unfortunately by this time youd be used to the commentators humorous dialog and it will all just seem repeditive.

It doesnt have much staying power as while the game does get progressively harder as your opponents level up alongside you it will always be pretty much the same. I still play it to this day, and was really into it when I first purchased it for about 2 weeks. Now I only play it occasionally.

Graphics are decent for its genre, jokes are funny, and you'll always have a feeling of satisfaction each time you score a "touchdown!!!". Despite it's looks, its a strategy game, dont buy if you are expecting a Fifa sort of game its just a board game in digital form.

I rate it 3 out of 5 because while it is fun, it lacks depth and I personally felt a little robbed paying £40 for it. Play's price of £29.99 is much more fitting.

Faithful, butToo Many bugs, bias RNG, many known issues

| | See all TotalWaster's reviews (3)

Yet i still give this game a 3/5, Simply because it has been very faithfully transported from table top to PC. It is basically an exact replica of the board game, which is fantastic. There are many online leagues to play also, which should keep you happy for ages. The graphics look good, as do the animations, and gameplay is excellent.

However, there are many Skills which still have huge bugs in them and simply do not work as intended (or at all for that matter), online play is very hit and miss as far as server connection is concerned, and there is certainly a bias in the random number generator that, no matter how many people confirm in the forums, Cyanide simply will not admit to.

Furthermore, Cyanide have been very slow to react to the vast plethora of bugs, glitches and the like that this game still has (and that have been reported by players). It feels like a pre-beta version, rather than the final release. The screen is unecessarily cluttered, and the user interface is very clunky.

I honestly believe that, in time, Cyanide will fix these problems, but £30 is simply too much for what is clearly an unfinished game.

Hopefully, future patches will alleviate these issues, but if Cyanide don't do something to reassure the players, it may be too late by then...

 DANGEROUS CARD OVERHEAT

| | See all iambalrog's reviews (1)

I would strongly suggest avoiding this game. It has been shipped with known issues that cause graphics cards to over heat (see the forums over at cyanide studios). Its led to me need to buy a new graphics card, and a killed the performance of my freinds.
The game itself is ok, but its written to abuse hardware.
AVOID.
