A tropical paradise seethes with hidden evil in Far Cry, a cunningly detailed action shooter that pushes the boundaries of combat to shocking new levels.
Freelance mariner Jack Carver is cursing the day he ever came to this island. A week ago, a brash female reporter named Valerie had offered him an incredible sum of cash to take her to this unspoiled paradise. Shortly after docking, however, Jack's boat was greeted by artillery fire from a mysterious militia group swarming about the island.
With his boat destroyed, his money gone and the gorgeous Valerie suddenly missing, Jack now finds himself facing an army of mercenaries amid the wilds of the island, with nothing but a gun and his wits to survive by. But the further he pushes into the lush jungle canopy, the stranger things become.
Jack encounters an insider within the militia group who reveals the horrific details of the mercenaries' true intentions. He presents Jack with an unsettling choice: battle the deadliest mercenaries or condemn the human race to a maniac's insidious agenda.

    Wow,

How PC game prices compare to consoles is amazing.

This game is very good and a steal at under £10.

If your computer hardware is good then the visuals in this game will blow you away... and still beat the next gen consoles for physics and map detail... you'll see Fantastic detailed jungle environments. Brilliant water effects and sun light streaming down is excellent.

In terms of action this game is great, fantastic enemies and settings and reasonable AI will challenge most gamers.

As with all First person shooters, using a mouse is far faster and more accurate than a game pad, and you will need that here. With enemies hitting you from hard and low.

The sound track is great and weapon sound effects fantastic. Weapons such as the P90 and M4 carbine remain my favourites though.

This game is great also for taking enemies out from a distance and not for the outrageous running in and taking out 5 enemies in room. Getting a headshot with a P90 from a couple of hundred metres away is great.

I like the sneaking around the jungle.

As with most shooters since halo. You can drive vehicles to get between points quicker and run people over etc...

    A great game.

    Buy it now

Gets sooooo much better, into the 2nd half of the game

    Top 100 Games Reviewer

I first played this title when it originally came out and was disappointed by the gameplay. Stopped playing at level 12. I became bored as others have mentioned, when the action became fairly repetative, that was playing the game on medium setting.

But that was a mistake, because I recently returned to it and played it right through on Veteran difficultly level. On this setting, the game becomes a very different kettle of fish. The AI becomes much better at co-ordinating its attacks. While tougher enemies means more planning is required, to overcome the enemies between you and your objective. As such, mistakes are not so easily forgiven. Equipment availability becomes much less. All this combines to provide much more of a challenge. The variety of missions changes as you meet up with Val the heroine of the game. Keeping her alive, giving her time to activate equipment, are just some of the different challenges in the latter part of the game. Level maps too, become more cleverly designed adding to the challenge. Especially, the boat riding ones.

Graphics may be a littled dated, but the forest and foilage effects are still more than convincing as you move through them. However, interiors are bland, only serving minimal purpose. The thermal imaging camera view in later levels is top notch though and also provides another level of tactical planning, to now when to use them and when to save the battery. Weapons are nothing amazing, but all add to the game experience and there are enough loadout configurations to choose from, and make everyone happy. I dont usually like sniper rifles as I like to get my hands dirty, but you will definitely need it to remove some difficult adversaries and I found it required equipment in the latter third of the game. And it has a satisfying clunk to it.

Cutscene narration adds some sense of story, but for most of the time these can be ignored until you meet up with Val when the mission types start to get more narrow, promising to unravel more of the background story. Which isn't anything spectacular, but still very good.

Overall, while I was disappointed with the first 1/2 of the game,
twice playing to around level 10-12...., I at last managed to get past the repeitive gameplay and onto the latter stages. It is these later levels that provide a real challenge to your tactical awareness, planning, reactions and ammunition conservation. Especially towards the end.... with some really hellish levels. :)

A thouroughly enjoyable experience, with a very capable AI, excellent level design for the most part and a decent story with a hint of SF. All combined with a great sound and snappy soundtrack and a still very good graphics engine.

Review difficulty based on VETERAN level. 1 below max (REALISTIC).

     Great game!

This is simply a great game, there's nothing else to say, even if it was released (if I remember well) in 2004 it is still actual because it has great graphic, sound and playability. Whatch out for the difficulty level, because I played at medium setting and found the game very difficult but never frustrating (even if the final battle was veeeery hard).
Another charachteristic of the game is that it saves automatically at check points, many people could complain about it, but I think that this adds some good "tension" to the gameplay.
The game is very long and you won't finish it very soon.
    Definitely two thumbs up!!

     Brilliant

It is 2008 and this game does not feel dated, I got it for £4.50 and it's money well spent.
Whack your grx on full settings and enjoy this masterpiece.
