If you liked Empire Total War then you'll LOVE this one. True as it has been said above "if you want to conquor the world then this isn't the game" BUT then it does say that in the title!!??!! This game concentrates on Europe which has been vastly expanded with more and larger regions.
A game turn is now 2 weeks so 2 turns equals 1 month of play. If you follow the Main campaign then you have missions to complete in order to move on, without that you can't unlock the next stage of gameplay.
If, like me, you have and still are having problems with Empire Total War graphics on the campaign and battle screens then there is NO sign of it here. I only hope they transfer the coding to Empire so it can settle that game down. I have played Napoleon on Ultra unit size and highest graphics without a problem.
I particulary like the screen shake from the cannon fire both on ships and ground upon impact. Nice addition that. The AI is vastly improve. For example if you see their units flee and then you dont keep an eye on it, it will rally and come back at you from the rear/side/where-ever. Lost several units that way, this is a huge improvement on Empire. The graphics are better and look far better and richer. Ground scortching from artillery for example.
I really enjoy this game, and like I said I only hope they transfer some of the coding to Empire and then you have the choice - Conquor Europe or the World!!
Having not played a Total War game since Shogun Total War I really didn't know what to expect. Therefore when I played my first battle I was simply blown away.
Zoomed out the scale is epic, craters appear in the ground as cannon fire resounds across the battle field and the ranks of men march steadily across.
Zoom in however and the tramp of boots, the marching beat and the nervous mutterings of the men can all be heard. When they charge the camera shakes and a roar goes up which all adds to the epic experience.
The graphics are great and there are also enough models so the squads look mixed, rather than like the clone armies you used to get.
So battles are great...campaign then...
Well I enjoyed it, mostly...I played on a moderate difficulty setting and had a fairly good time. Taking Paris and ramaging through Europe was very enjoyable (I was the British). However the AI was remarkably stupid on some occasions (hence the 4 stars) and often attacked my armies with a single squad of men whilst its huge armies wandered aimlessly round the country side until I came and put them out of their misery.
However this was fairly rare and for the most part I found the game challanging and rewarding to play.
Highly reccomended for those who have played Total War games before, enjoy commanding huge armies in tactical battles or simply want to show Napoleon how its done.
i have bought napoleon total war recently and i was amzed with quality of the gameplay. the graphics are amazing and the A.I are just brilliant.
I give this 5 star not because of any vast improvement in graphics or campain (although both are still stunning) but for the improvements I have found in ai and gameplay,
the entire experience just seems to flow smoothly whether on the battle map or campain and in both cases the ai has notasably improved . On the harder difficulties the computer is actually agrresive and tactical looking to focus on the weakest points and take advantage of any errors you make.
In previous total war games you could build one all mighty army and win the game with it, try that now and you might just get a surpriese.
In the end a must have for fans and by far the best experience from a total war to date.
I always used to love games like age of empires 3 but was always left feeling slightly dissapointed to a degree where battles are involved. Especially as the groups of units in some games have a limit and even at the limit it isnt anything near spectacular.
After hearing about the total war series i thought i should give it a go. I then discovered Napoleon Total War and i can tell you i will never look back, after reading reviews and researching the game i knew instantly that this was a spectacle to behold.
The thing that amazed me was the size of the armies, I have never seen so many units on a map before, and the ability to get close at any angle to view the battle was amazing. The best bit is when the two forces meet with such bang you can alsmost feel the pain yourself. Backed up by endless artillery strikes and the magestic but forceful calvry charging across the battle feild it is nothing short of cinematic in the slightest along with huge atmospheric maps.
The campaigns are easy to get to grips with too and offer an amazing game and an important history lesson into the military past of europe.
This is a definite buy for any strategy fan, history fan and gamers looking for something bigger that packs an almighty punch!!
