Need For Speed Shift 2: Unleashed is the next entry in the blockbuster Need for Speed simulation series. The original Shift game was released in September 2009 and has sold through close to five million copies globally. Its success was propelled by the revolutionary true driver's experience - a game design that was heralded by critics as more visceral, more physical and more intense than any other title in the sim category. Capturing the physicality and brutality of racing at 200mph has been the leading area of innovation by the award-winning development team at Slightly Mad Studios. Need For Speed Shift 2: Unleashed builds on the true drivers experience by introducing the driver's battle, an even more authentic and primal feeling of power and speed which elevates the fundamental competitive race into a struggle for supremacy against other drivers and even the track itself.

In Need For Speed Shift 2: Unleashed, players' hands sweat and ache as they clutch onto the controller, their pulse races from the break-neck speeds experienced through the first-person cockpit view. Launching in Spring 2011, Need For Speed Shift 2: Unleashed pushes the envelope with the most authentic and intense racing experience in the genre.

Need For Speed Shift 2: Unleashed features an all-new rendering engine with a massive graphics overhaul that puts the player in the heart of the racing action. With an innovative helmet camera view simulating the physical experience of driving at 200mph, the thrilling experience of night racing and authentic degradation of tracks and cars, this is tomorrow's sim for today's adrenaline fueled racer. Need For Speed Shift 2: Unleashed also incorporates the next generation of Need for Speed Autolog - the groundbreaking network that connects friends for epic head-to-head races and compares player stats for the ultimate social racing competition.

  • Next level of immersion: Experience visceral first-person racing like never before. The all-new helmet cam recreates realistic driver head movements that deliver an unparalleled sensation of speed: lean and tilt into the apex of corners, feel the impact of every scrape, bump, and crash, experience true in-cockpit vibrations, and more.
  • True realistic racing: Need For Speed Shift 2: Unleashed redefines the racing simulator genre by bringing the atmosphere of race day to life. From authentic car and crash physics to terrifying night racing to the battle-scarred look and feel of both cars and tracks, Need For Speed Shift 2: Unleashed leaves no detail behind in delivering the most authentic racing game experience yet. Featuring the FIA GT1 World Championship and GT3 European Championship plus real-world drivers, tracks, and cars, this is truly tomorrow's sim for today's adrenaline-fueled racer.
  • Amazing career depth and variety: Earn unlocks and participate in multiple racing disciplines on the way to becoming the FIA GT1 World Champion. Featuring everything from new Endurance races to muscle and retro cars, Need For Speed Shift 2: Unleashed gives you the flexibility to choose the path that fits your individual racing style. Fight for position, dominate opponents, and annihilate track times every time out-the battle doesn't end at the finish line, it extends throughout your entire racing career.
  • Change the game with autolog: Autolog is a revolutionary system that connects friends and changes the gameplay experience by allowing you to share virtually every aspect of your racing career. Compare Driver Profiles and career status, share and comment on pictures and videos, send challenges, and pull news feeds directly from NFS.com and Speehunters.com. Autolog recommendations amp up the social competition of real-world racing by delivering challenges based on friend activity, creating a dynamic, competitive, fun new way to play both online and offline.
  • Customize for Show or Customize to Win! Unleash your creativity to turn some of the world's most elite high-performance vehicles into fire-breathing weapons. Customize the engine, the body, the suspension, and much, much more, then put your ultimate racing machine to the test in any mode.  Shockingly Bad Graphics - downward step

| | See all GabethePilot's reviews (3)

Despite all the improved features you'll hear about, this is a retrogradive step for this franchise.

Graphics are awful - down to a maximim of 2x MS AA from last years 4x, and forcing any more using nHancer or Nvidia Inspector is not possible.

Huge input lag especially fro wheel users, and you wonder why they bothered. Oh... just so they could include a few tracks with night lighting.

Well, if you're not bothered about jaggies and horrible FPS, buy it.

Driving Force GT and Vs. GT5

Okay so I own Gran turismo 5 and I loved it, for the reality of the game play etc and I didn't think any other developer would beat this sort of game for a while! And out of all the developers! Need For Speed brings it home.. and some. (Bearing in mind, this is with a Driving Force GT wheel) The game-play is incredible, the Bots feel human, the car handling is superb especially with the wheel, customization is limitless, you really feel like you're in the seat with the new 'Helmet Cam', you're view is shaking and looking into the corners frantically and it just feels fantastic. However.. online is a bit of a pain when you get a little kid who just wants to wreck you in a serious race. Trying to keep this short and sweet, If you like racing simulators like GT5... my guess is you will LOVE this.

 Very Good Racer!

I really enjoyed the 1st Shift game. It gave more of a challenge than most driving games. This one takes it a step further. AI has been greatly improved, and the whole atmosphere of the game is fantastic, you really get sucked into the action. The physics are good but not perfect, but all driving games are different, it just takes a bit of time to adjust. I don't see anything wrong with the graphics, it all depends on what hardware you have, and at the end of the day, PC kicks any console to the ground! The input lag has been fixed with a patch and there is another one coming to further improve the game. Also the DLC is on its way for the PC too. I cannot play GT5 after this, it just seems so placid.
This one sorts the men from the boys!

Okay, but this is not a big improvement over the first one

I am a huge fan of the racing genre and I have a fairly powerful gaming machine. I sometimes play Need for Speed Hot Pursuit on PC and previously owned Need for Speed Shift on Xbox 360 (which I played to death).

I had high hopes for this title on the PC as the Xbox 360 is somewhat limited hardware and is a few years behind what a modern PC can do. However, it seems that EA have not taken this into account with the PC release.

Visually, it is just like looking at the first game on Xbox 360 but on a PC. The graphics are DX9 when we have had DX11 for circa 2 years. The textures are basic and there are limited visual effects. Even maxing out all settings and lashings of anisotropic filtering or anti-aliasing are not enough to improve the underlying look.

On the play side, the menus have been simplified from the first version but the selection of race events seems less clear than in the first version.

You begin with limited money and a humble choice of vehicles. You must go through a driving assessment before you begin. Once into the racing, you remember the 'feel' first introduced into NFS Shift and something previously lacking in all racers bar the highly rated Gran Turismo on Playstation.

The racing experience and handling of the cars is excellent, so I see this as closer to a simulation than arcade racer and perhaps the closest rival is Forza Motorsport. Why are the graphics such a basic console port?

 Awesome!

I played Forza 3 on the XBox 360 and loved it. I dont own an Xbox and trawled the internet looking for a game that was as good as Forza but on the PC. After not finding much, I saw this and thought I would give it a go, expecting to be dissapointed.

I was wrong.

This game is very, very good, possibly even better then Forza. Just like Forza you can customize and change and upgrade your car, tire pressures, gear ratios, ride hight etc - well pretty much everything. The cars have perfomance index rating depending on how much you upgrade and tune them. You can also create custom paint jobs on your car to make them unique. It has a nice selection of tracks and the option of night races.

The graphics are superb. On my PC it looks absolutely awesome, much better then anything Ive seen on the Xbox. The models are spot on, I drive a Mitsubishi Lancer in real life and the cockpit in game is identical - even down to the colour and style of writing on the dash board displays. The handling does take a little getting used to - I must admit when I first started playing I wasnt too sure at all. However once you get into the game, and your able to properly set up your car, the handling feels as good, if not better then Forza. I play with an official Xbox controller for windows and found it a little too sensitive, however by adjusting the Wheel Lock option on your car setting in game, it sorts this right out. I imagine it would be even better with a wheel.

The only negatives I can think of, is in the game you are guided by this slightly annoying American racing guy who Ive never heard of, and the game in general is just a bit slightly over dramatised. Also all the cars are left hand drive and Im not sure if there is an option to change this.
