In Sid Meier's Pirates! you take the leading role of a Pirate Captain in the 17th century Caribbean amassing fortune and fame in an attempt to seize your rightful place as one of the most revered (and feared!) pirates in history. Test your skills as a sea captain exploring the high seas and exotic ports in a richly detailed 3D world. Overtake the enemy and seize valuable booty. Exchange plank-shattering broadsides in fierce naval battles, and engage in duels with worthy opposing captains.

As your reputation and skills grow, so will the size and quality of your crew, and your ability to take on larger enemy ships, raid and plunder heavily fortified ports, and locate ancient treasure. There's a whole cast of interesting and dangerous characters to meet, mysteries to solve, exotic island destinations to discover, and powerful alliances to forge!
The new Sid Meier's Pirates! carries on with the great gameplay and design simplicity tradition of the award-winning original while adding more challenging and exciting battle options, and a deeper and more varied role-playing experience, including multiple paths to a wealthy, happy retirement. This and many other features and additions make this gaming classic one of the most highly anticipated releases of this century!
  • Experience an all-new story built upon the most fun and compelling features of the original Pirates! game.
  • Live out multiple quests through a non-linear, open life timeline where every decision poses distinct challenges and possibilities.
  • Witness the consequences of your actions in current events throughout the Pirates! world.
  • Battle, overtake and command 27 different ship types, enhanced with assorted ammo, cannon and other upgrades.
  • Take on various foes including merchant and military captains, ferocious pirates, evil gentry and even rival suitors - each with different skills and abilities.
  • Confront enemies on board ships, in seedy taverns, on the ramparts and even at the Governor's mansion.
  • Wield weapons - or anything within your reach - as you fence against foes.
  • Engage in fierce naval battles fighting single enemies or multiple ships.
  • Sneak into towns, escape out of prisons, navigate around adversaries and surprise unsuspecting vessels.
  • Dispatch landing parties of buccaneers in strategic battles to take over entire cities
  • Increase your riches and impress the governor's daughter with your charm, fame, heroism - even your dancing abilities.
  • Collect items (swords, spyglasses, armour, hats, coats, etc.) that improve skills or provide other new benefits and view them in a new inventory system.
  • Enhance your gameplay experience with downloadable content including flags, sail emblems, character skins and more.

 Arrr!!! (and assorted pirate clichés)

Ten years ago I was eight years old. Ten years ago, my elder brother owned an Amiga. Ten years ago, I stumbled across a disk called Pirates! I fell in love.

Ten yarrs (haha! oh...hoho! Oh dear...) seems like a long time, and a lot has changed. But not the love. Oh no.

The remake of Pirates! is absolutely fantastic. The same addictivity of the original has been retained. It's still a thrill to hear the wind hurtling your ship towards harbour, to sail precariously into salvoes of enemy fire and to clash swords with enemy captains, to earn gold, fame and ultimately, the governor's loverly daughters. Although a lot of these aspects now have a more console-like make up (the emphasis is now on button pressing rather than the rampant mouse-clicking of the original), they are still as fun as they ever were.

Along with this is the free-form campaign, again still as excellent as ever. I was extremely pleased to see that there have been no limits placed on your roaming and no storyline forced down your throat - if you want you need never search for your lost family, although the chance is there if you want it. The game assumes huge amounts of longevity in the simple fact that you can do whatever your piratey self wishes.

And, of course, the gorgeous new graphics refuse to be ignored. The blurred images of old are gone, the Pirates! world now assumes a colourful, beautiful, stunning identity.

I've owned this game for a long time, and at £7.99 there's no excuse for any of you to avoid it. Buy it - it's a gaming classic. 'nuff said.

Sid Meier's Pirates has stood the test of time and this remake has better graphics and sound but still keeps to the gameplay that made the game so great first time round.

There have been many pirate games been made and many have tried to out do this game without any luck.

One piece of pirate software every PC user should own!

Addictive, appealing and surprisingly educational, Pirates! embodies the core of the swashbuckling experience, and is also like practically nothing else currently on the market. A brief bit of plot gives you somewhere to set your sails to, but ultimately this is pure open-world gameplay at its finest, set in a meticulously crafted 17th Century Caribbean.

Essentially a collection of minigames - wait, wait, don't run off screaming yet! - Pirates! combines canny swordplay, map-following booty-hunting, governor's-daughter-wooing (for those of you hunting an altogether more supple form of 'booty') and tactical ship combat. The pacing of the game is brilliant; though you make your own way in the world, the game offers you plenty of distractions to wander off and follow, hence its addictive appeal.

The game itself makes excellent design decisions also. Everything is plainly laid out and easy to follow, with an ingame encyclopedia should you get lost. The game autosaves every time you do anything of importance, meaning you can quit and load up as you please, making for excellent bitesize pockets of play.

It's cheap as chips, runs on any computer built in the last half-decade with ease and is good clean swashbuckling fun. If there's anything more to ask from the criminally underepresented pirate videogame genre, I don't know what it is!
